PROBLEM

The existing engine oil pump shaft spline can have improper machining on certain 5328727/">532-8727 Oil Pumps, 20R-8235 Oil Pumps, and 532-8728 Oil Pump Shafts. An incorrectly machined oil pump can create a thrust load on the oil pump shaft resulting in oil pump bearing failure.

Rework Procedure

Removal Guidance for Pumps on Engine:
Note: It is recommended to reference the Disassembly and Assembly Manual for complete information on component removal, tooling, and proper torques. The steps below are general guidance on recommended removal steps.

1.) Drain Engine Oil

2.) Remove alternator guard, Alternator belt, Alternator, and associated mounting brackets. Save all hardware to be re-installed.

3.) Remove the oil suction elbow and pickup tube from the side of the oil pan. Save hardware for reinstallation.

4.) Remove oil fill tube assembly from side of the oil pan. Save hardware for reinstallation.

5.) Remove air intake manifold section directly above oil pump. Save hardware for reinstallation.

6.) Remove short oil tube between oil pump outlet elbow and oil coolers. Save hardware for reinstallation.
Image1.1.1

7.) Install support strap or ratchet strap around the body of the oil regulator valve in order to constrain the regulator once the pump is removed. Do not strap around the oil pump outlet elbow that will be removed. IMPORTANT: The regulator valve will be supported by the discharge tube, along with the strap holding it back against the engine. Ensure it is properly constrained prior to proceeding.
Image1.2.1

8.) Once regulator is supported, remove three bolts holding pump outlet elbow to the regulator. New hardware provided the parts needed.

9.) Remove 2 bolts and one stud bolt holding oil pump outlet elbow to oil pump. Remove oil pump outlet elbow from engine and retain for reinstallation. New mounting bolts provided in the parts needed.

Image1.3.2

10.) Install a suitable lifting device onto oil pump for removal. Unbolt pump from front housing and slide pump rearward to disengage splines. Slowly lower the pump to ground level. Retain mounting bolts for reinstallation.

Inspection Procedure for Pump:
1.) Inspect oil pumps or shafts to ensure that the splines are machined correctly.

Refer to the Image1.5.1.
Image1.5.1

2. Proper machining dimensions are detailed in the Image1.6.1. Typically suspect shafts can be identified with a visual inspection.
Image1.6.1

3.) If the pump spline is incorrectly machined and the pump was installed onto an engine, also inspect the mating gear and spline in the front geartrain for any damage.

4.) Replace all damaged or non-conforming parts prior to reassembly.

Pump Installation Guidance:
Note: It is recommended to reference the Disassembly and Assembly Manual for complete information on component removal, tooling, and proper torques. The steps below are general guidance on recommended installation steps.

1.) If Oil pump did not pass spline inspection and a new pump is being installed, the alternator drive pulley and hardware must be moved to the new oil pump.

2.) Lift oil pump into place using a suitable lifting device. Install mounting bolts holding pump to front housing and torque pump mounting bolts.

3.)Loose fit oil pump outlet elbow in place with new mounting hardware. Torque 3 bolts holding outlet elbow to the oil pressure regulator.
Image1.8.1

4.) Loosen support strap from the regulator assembly. Install 2 mounting bolts and one mounting stud onto bottom joint of oil pump outlet elbow and keep bolts loose.
Image1.9.1

5.) Remove support strap from the regulator.

6.) Apply final torque to 2 mounting bolts and 1 mounting stud on bottom joint of oil pump outlet elbow.

7.) Install oil tube between outlet elbow and oil coolers and torque.
Image1.10.1

8.) Reinstall Oil suction elbow and tube and torque in place.

9.) Reinstall Oil fill tube and torque in place.

10. Reinstall alternator and associated mounting and guards.

11.) Re-apply final torque to 3 bolts between oil pump outlet elbow and oil regulator.
