Start By:

  1. Remove the heat exchanger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Heat Exchanger - Remove".

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali.

At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.

Remove cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Do not attempt to tighten hose connections when the coolant is hot, the hose can come off causing burns.

Cooling System Coolant Additive contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

    Note: Mark the orientation of both bonnet (2) and elbow (4) in relation to the housing.

  1. Remove bolts (3) and remove elbow (4) .

  1. Remove bolts (1) and remove bonnet (2) from the heat exchanger.

  1. Remove both zinc rods (5) from bonnet (2) .

    Typical Example

  1. Remove core assembly (8) from housing (6) .

  1. If necessary, clean debris from the core assembly. Use Tooling (A) in order to clean deposits from the tube assemblies.

  1. Remove spring pin (7) .

    Note: Mark the orientation of bonnet (10) in relation to housing (6) .

  1. Remove bolts (9) and remove bonnet (10) .

  1. Remove shims (12) and remove seal (11) .

  1. Remove elbow (13) from housing (6) .
