Alternator - Remove and Install

Usage:

C18 NBB

Removal Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from failure to disconnect the battery.

First, disconnect the negative battery cable. Then, disconnect the positive battery cable.

A positive power lead can cause sparks if the battery is not disconnected. Sparks can possibly result in battery explosion or fire.

  1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Remove bolts (1) and remove guard (2) .

  1. Put an identification mark on the harness assemblies that are connected to the alternator for installation purposes. Disconnect the harness assemblies from the alternator.

  1. Loosen nuts (9) on adjustment rod (10) .

  1. Loosen the nut on bolt (5). Push the bottom of the alternator toward the cylinder block. Remove the V-belt from the alternator pulley.

  1. Remove bolt (5) and bolt (8). Remove alternator (6) .

  1. Remove nut (7) and the alternator pulley from the alternator.

  1. Remove nuts (3) and remove bracket (4) .

  1. Install the alternator pulley and nut (7). Tighten the nut to a torque of 102 ± 7 N·m (75 ± 5 lb ft).

  1. Position bracket (4) in position on the studs. Apply Tooling (A) to the threads of the studs. Install nuts (3) and tighten to a torque of 70 ± 5 N·m (52 ± 4 lb ft).

  1. Put alternator (6) in position on bracket (4) and install bolt (5) .

  1. Put adjustment rod (10) in position on the alternator and install bolt (8) .

  1. Install the V-belt. Tighten the V-belt. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Belt Tension Chart".

  1. Tighten nuts (9) to a torque of 30 ± 15 N·m (22 ± 11 lb ft).

  1. Connect the harness assemblies on the alternator. Tighten the nuts. Refer to Specifications, "Alternator" for the torque values.

  1. Position guard (2) and install bolts (1) .

  1. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
