Filter Elements Are Being Installed In The Wrong Oil Filters During Service

Usage:

OFF-HIGHWAY TRUCKS797 (5YW1-UP) OFF-HIGHWAY TRUCKS

Problem:

The 166-6892 Filter Element (40 micron) and the 167-2009 Filter Element (6 micron) are sometimes getting installed in the incorrect hydraulic oil filter.

Solution:

It is imperative that the correct filter element be installed for the correct application. There are three 152-4811 Hydraulic Filters, for the front and rear brake cooling, steering and fan drive systems, that require the 166-6892 Hydraulic Filter Element which is a 40 micron filter. There are two 147-6624 Oil Filters, for the torque converter and transmission systems, that require the 167-2009 Hydraulic Filter Element which is a 6 micron filter. Installing a 166-6892 Hydraulic Filter Element in a 147-6624 Oil Filter can cause damage to the torque converter and transmission control valves.

Although the outside diameters of the two filter elements are identical, the inner diameters are not. The 166-6892 Hydraulic Filter Element has a smaller diameter center hole than that of the 167-2009 Hydraulic Filter Element. This is because the three 152-4811 Hydraulic Filters have a smaller diameter center rod assembly than the two 147-6624 Oil Filters. Refer to Table 1 for the proper filter element for each hydraulic oil filter application:

Table 1.

Proper identification of the two types of hydraulic oil filters is needed to help ensure that the correct filter elements are installed in the correct hydraulic oil filter. For proper identification of the five hydraulic oil filters, refer to the following illustrations. Below each illustration is the common name that is sometimes associated with each hydraulic oil filter. For the locations and common names of the three 152-4811 Hydraulic Filters, refer to Illustrations 1, 2 and 3. For the locations and common names of the two 147-6624 Oil Filters, Refer to Illustrations 4 and 5.
