Wiper Seals Are Becoming Dislodged On The Front And Rear Suspension Cylinders

Usage:

OFF-HIGHWAY TRUCK797 (5YW1-UP) OFF-HIGHWAY TRUCK

Problem:

The 149-2697 and 151-8415 Lip Type Seals are being pushed out of position. Suspect that the press fit is not high enough to correlate to the larger diameter (reduced radial compression).

Solution:

Front Suspension Cylinder

In order to secure the 149-2697 Lip Type Seal, four holes will need to be drilled and tapped into the ends of the housing assembly so that four bolts and retaining washers can be installed.

Refer to Table 1 for a list of required parts. Refer to the following procedure and to Illustration 1 for proper installation of the four retaining bolts and washers.

Table 1.

Illustration 1.

1. Ensure that lip seal (3) is installed properly.
2. Drill four equally spaced holes that are ( 7.00-A 23.00 DP on a 438.2 mm (17.252 inch.) diameter into the end of suspension cylinder (1).
3. Tap the four holes.
4. Apply anti-seize to the threads of four bolts (2). Install four bolts (2) and four washers (4).

Rear Suspension Cylinder

In order to secure the 151-8415 Lip Type Seal, the two 151-8295 Cover Assemblies will need to be removed and a bead of weld that is 3 to 4 mm in depth added to the inside radius of the 151-8295 Cover Assembly.

Refer to the following procedure:

Illustration 2.

Illustration 3.

1. Ensure that lip seal (7) is installed properly.
2. Ensure that lip seal (7) is installed properly.
3. Use a suitable workbench and a welder to apply a 3 mm to 4 mm (0.12 inch to 0.16 inch) high bead to the inner radius of cover assembly (5). Grind the weld so that it has the same profile as cover assembly (5).
4. Use the two bolts and washers to re-install cover assembly (5) onto rear suspension cylinder (6).
5. Repeat this procedure for the remaining cover assembly (5).
