SUBJECT: Shimming Procedure For The Two 150-9164 Transmission Output Speed Sensors On The 797 Off-Highway Truck
PROBLEM:
The two 150-9164 Transmission Output Speed Sensors that are located in the differential carrier assembly are coming into contact with the 141-3134 Transmission Output Speed Sensor Ring Gear.
SOLUTION:
Shims need to be installed in order to eliminate interference between the sensors and the ring gear. Refer to Table 1 for a list of available shims.

Shim |
Thickness |
0.38 mm (0.015 inch) |
|
0.25 mm (0.010 inch) |
|
0.13 mm (0.005 inch) |
Note: The outside diameter of the shims that are listed in Table 1 will need to be trimmed in order to fit into the speed sensor mounting bracket. The shims will need to be trimmed so that the outside diameter is no larger than 29.5 mm (1.16 inch). Only after the shims have been properly trimmed should they be installed into the speed sensor mounting bracket.
The following procedure illustrates the steps that are required to properly shim the transmission output speed sensor:
Step 1. Remove access cover (1) located on the backside of the differential and bevel gear assembly.
Step 2. Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the tip of output speed sensor (4) and the tip of a tooth on ring gear (2). Repeat this procedure for speed sensor (5). It will be necessary to rotate ring gear (2) to align speed sensor (5) with the tip of a gear tooth. If the measured gap between ring gear (2) and either speed sensor is less than 1 mm ± 0.5 mm (0.04 inch ± 0.02 inch) the speed sensor will need to be shimmed.
Step 3. Disconnect wire harness (3) from speed sensors (4) and (5). Remove the speed sensors from the bracket assembly. Assemble a combination of shims, if necessary, from Table 1 in order to achieve a gap of 1 mm ± 0.5 mm (0.04 inch ± 0.02 inch) between the tip of the speed sensors and the tip of a tooth from ring gear (2).
Step 4. Install speed sensors (4) and (5). Use a feeler gauge to verify that the gap is 1 mm ± 0.5 mm (0.04 inch ± 0.02 inch).
Step 5. Connect wire harness (3) to speed sensors (4) and (5).
Step 6. Install access cover (1) with a new gasket.
