Usage:
3606 (8RB),
3608 (6MC),
3612 (9RC),
3616 (1PD) Engines
Description of Change: Improved "Woodward 2301A" Electronic Control Groups are used with the 3600 Family of Engines in generator set applications. The new control groups have internal changes that change the engine speed signal filter from 15 hertz to 7.5 hertz. This change improves the engine stability and does not affect engine response. Engine stability problems can cause other control system problems or torsional driveline failures.
Adaptable To: The new control groups replace the former control groups as follows.
The new 4P1561 Control Group replaces the former 9Y6982 Control Group.
The new 4P1570 Control Group replaces the former 7C7824 Control Group.
The new 4P1579 Control Group replaces the former 7W1444 Control Group.
The improved control groups are effective with 3600 Engines 8RB401, 6MC307, 9RC086, 1PD043.
If a new control group is installed, see the "Pre-Startup Instructions" and "After Startup Instructions".
Pre-Startup Instructions
The pre-startup potentiometer (pot) settings recommended in the "Woodward 2301A Manual" may be to responsive for some of the 3600 Family Of Engines in generator set applications. The following pot settings should be used as the pre-startup adjustment of the governor. The list of pot adjustments that follows is based on a scale of 0 to 10.
Set Gain Pot at 2
Set Reset Pot at 5
Set Compensation Pot at 0
Changes from these setting after startup should be made with caution.
After Startup Instructions
1. After the engine is started, warm the engine and coupling by adding load.
2. Remove the load and check for stable operation at low and high idle. Watch for rapid motion of the actuator lever (about 5-10 Hz).
3. Shut the engine down if the rapid actuator lever motion occurs. After shutting the engine down, either decrease the setting on the gain pot or increase slightly increase the setting on the reset pot. Then, repeat Steps 1 and 2.
NOTE: DO NOT set the compensation pot greater than 2 (0 is preferred). If the compensation pot setting is greater than 2, unstable operation may cause coupling damage.
NOTE: If misfire is detected, the engine should be shut down and the fuel system checked. Misfire can be detected by using individual exhaust temperature alarms. Set the alarms for activation when a cylinder is 50°C (122°F) lower than the mean temperature of the other cylinders.
