Inspection Of Valve Guide Seals{1104}

Usage:

3406E (5EK12640-15000) Truck Engines

If "oil slobber" (unburned oil out of exhaust pipe) is a problem on one of these engines, it may be a result of valve guide seals riding up on the valve stem (not in the correct location on the top of the valve guide). If the valve guide seal is not in the correct position, excess oil may be allowed run down the valve stem and into the cylinder.

Valve Guide Seal Location Inspection Procedure

1. Remove the valve cover.

2. Use a mirror and flashlight to make a visual inspection of the position of the valve guide seals at locations where the valve spring is NOT compressed. It will be necessary to rotate the engine to inspect all the valve guide seals.

3. If the valve guide seal is NOT in the correct position on the valve guide, replace the valve guide and seal with the new 122-7375 Valve Guide and 102-6229 Valve Guide Seal. See the Service Manual, Disassembly And Assembly module for the correct procedures to remove and install the valve guides and valve guide seals.
