Finding Top Dead Center (TDC) For Setting Valve Lash{0374}
Usage:
3406E (5EK) Truck Engines Equipped With An Allison HD Transmission
TDC on engines equipped with an Allison HD transmission can not be determined using the pin timing procedure because a flywheel is not used in this application. Flex plates are used in place of a flywheel. Timing holes can not be added to the flex plates because the timing holes are on the same diameter as the connecting bolts.
Caterpillar suggests using a dial indicator to locate top dead center of the number 1 piston. Another method is to use the slot in the crankshaft (25 degrees before top dead center) as a reference to mark the damper.
3406E (5EK) Truck Engines equipped with an Allison HT transmission CAN be pin timed in the normal manner.
