Flywheel - Remove and Install

  1. Remove two of bolts (1) from flywheel (2). Install Tooling (A).

  2. Use Tooling (B), Tooling (C), and Tooling (D) to support flywheel (2). The weight of flywheel (2) is approximately 177 kg (390 lb).

  3. Remove remaining bolts (1) and spacer (3).

  4. Slide flywheel (2) on Tooling (A). Remove flywheel (2).

Installation Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

Always wear protective gloves when handling parts that have been heated.


  1. Inspect the condition of the ring gear. Use the following procedure to replace the ring gear, if necessary.

    1. Remove the damaged ring gear from the flywheel.

    2. Raise the temperature of the new ring gear.

    3. Install the ring gear on the flywheel. Ensure that the chamfer of the gear teeth will be towards the pinion of the starting motor.

  2. Install Tooling (A).

  3. Use Tooling (B), Tooling (C), and Tooling (D) to position flywheel (2) onto Tooling (A). The weight of flywheel (2) is approximately 177 kg (390 lb).

  4. Install spacer (3) onto flywheel (2).

  5. Lubricate the threads of new bolts (1) with engine oil. Install new bolts (1). Remove Tooling (B), Tooling (C), and Tooling (D).

  6. Remove Tooling (A) and install remaining new bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 1000 ± 60 N.m (738 ± 44 lb ft).
