Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
There have been instances of coolant leaks from the 458-8496 Cooler (NRS) on certain engines. The leak may result in a E2143 Low Engine Coolant Level or E361 High Engine Coolant Temperature event code.
Solution
Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility. |
Some of the returned parts have been found to have no leaks. Sometimes, the incorrect part number has been reported for the suspect part.
Ensure that all troubleshooting steps are performed and that any claim data is reported correctly.
- Use the electronic service tool to download a Product Status Report (PSR) before performing any troubleshooting.
- Perform the correct troubleshooting procedure. Refer to Troubleshooting for more information.
When troubleshooting coolant loss, ensure that coolant is not leaking externally from the coolant circuit. Check the following locations:
- Cooling pack
- Hose connections
- Cab heater
- DEF coolant circuit (coolant diverter valve, DEF injector, DEF tank)
- Test the condition of the NOx Reduction System (NRS) cooler. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, Exhaust Cooler (NRS) - Test for the correct procedure.
If the cooler is leaking, replace the cooler with the latest available part. If the cooler is not leaking, reinstall the cooler and continue with the troubleshooting steps.
Note: Retain the removed exhaust cooler (NRS) for 30 days. The exhaust cooler (NRS) may be requested for return through the Send It Back (SIB) process.
- In every instance of NRS cooler failure, submit the following information through "CPI Feedback" within the Service Information Management System (SIMSi):
- TIB media number M0102693
- CPI Number 438138
- Detailed description of the operating conditions when the issue occurred (altitude of job site, ambient temperature, and details of any components replaced).
- PSR from before and after performing troubleshooting. Ensure that PDF and XML versions of the PSR are downloaded, with the "Histogram" option selected in the download list.
