Start By:

  1. Remove the torque divider.


NOTICE

When a torque converter or divider has a failure, the complete oil system for the torque converter, torque divider and transmission must be throughly cleaned. Any foreign material which is not removed from the oil system for the torque converter will move through the hydraulic system for the transmission.

  1. Remove inner race bearing (2) .

  2. Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining ring (1). Remove retaining ring (1).

  3. Remove O-ring seal (3) and planetary carrier (4).

  4. Remove spacer (6) and seal (5).

  5. Remove metal seal ring (7).

  6. Use a suitable hammer and a punch to push pin (8) in to shaft (9).

  7. Remove shaft (9).

  8. Remove cup plug (10) and pin (8) from shaft (9). Discard pin (8).

  9. Remove thrust disc (11), gear assembly (12), and thrust disc (11).

  10. Remove bearing (13) from gear assembly (12).

  11. Repeat Step 6 through Step 10 for the remaining gears.

  12. Remove bolt (16), retainer (15), and yoke (14).

  13. Remove bolts (17) , drain group (18), and the O-ring seal.

  14. Remove suction screen (19) from the drain group.

  15. Remove O-ring seal (20) from yoke (14).

  16. Remove bolts (22) and retainer (21) from the torque divider.

  17. Remove O-ring seals (23) and (24) from the retainer.

  18. Remove lip seal (25).

  19. Place the torque divider on a suitable block as shown in illustration 14.

  20. Remove bolts (26). Attach Tooling (B) and suitable lifting device to cover (27). The weight of cover (27) is approximately 140 kg (309 lb).

  21. Remove cover (27).

  22. Remove O-ring seals (29).

  23. Attach Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device on shaft assembly (28). Remove shaft assembly (28).

  24. Remove seal ring (30).

  25. Place the shaft assembly in a suitable press. Remove ring carrier (31) and bearing (32).

  26. Attach Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device to support (34). The weight of support (34) is approximately 23 kg (51 lb).

  27. Remove bolts (33) and support (34).

  29. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device on the carrier. The weight of impeller and carrier assembly (37) is approximately 26 kg (57 lb).

  30. Remove bolts (38) and install Tooling (E) as shown in illustration 21.

  31. Remove impeller and carrier assembly (37).

  32. Remove bolts (40), plugs (39), and the O-ring seals.

  33. Remove bolts (41). Install Tooling (F) on swivel (42).

  34. Remove swivel (42) and impeller (43).

  37. Use Tooling (J) to remove retaining ring (47).

  38. Remove retaining ring (47) and carrier (46).

  39. Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining ring (48). Remove retaining ring (48), freewheel race (50), and side plate (49). Repeat for the opposite side.

    Note: Note the position of spring and rollers.

  40. Remove rollers (51) and spring (52).

  41. Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining ring (54) from the stator. Heat the stator to a maximum temperature of 135 °C (275 °F). Maintain the temperature for 15 minutes. Push cam (53) out of the stator.

  42. Place the impeller and carrier assembly over a suitable press and press in direction as shown in illustration 30. Remove impeller hub assembly (55).

  43. Remove bearing retainer assembly (56).

  44. Remove retainer (57), race (59), and bearing (58).

  45. Push the pin that holds seal carrier (60) to the carrier out of the carrier. Install Tooling (G) on the carrier as shown in illustration 33. Remove seal carrier (60) and bearing cone (61).

  46. Remove bearing retainer assembly (62).

  47. Remove retainer (63), race (65), and bearing (64).

    Note: Support flange assembly (67) from the bottom to prevent the assembly from falling when retaining ring (66) is removed.

  48. Use Tooling (J) to remove retaining ring (66). Remove retaining ring (66) and spacer (68).

  49. Attach Tooling (D) to housing (69). The weight of housing (69) is approximately 67 kg (148 lb). Separate housing (69) from the flange assembly.

  50. Remove O-ring seal (70) from flange assembly (67).

  51. Push down pins (71) with a hammer and with a punch. Remove ring (72) and the ring gear from the flange assembly.

  52. If sleeve bearings (73) are worn or damaged. Use Tooling (H) to remove sleeve bearings (73). Remove sleeve bearings (73).

    Note: Rotate the housing 90 degrees. When you drive the hub past the seal carrier, the seal carrier will fall. Put wood blocks under the seal carrier to prevent the seal carrier from being damaged.

  53. Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining ring (74). Remove retaining ring (74).

  54. Use Tooling (J) to remove retaining ring (75). Remove retaining ring (75).

  55. Use a suitable hammer and plate to create a clearance. Use Tooling (G) to remove turbine hub (76) and the turbine converter from the housing.

  56. Attach Tooling (B) and suitable lifting device to housing (69). The weight of housing (69) is approximately 67 kg (148 lb). Remove housing (69) from the turbine hub.

  60. Rotate housing 180 degrees. Use tooling (G) to remove sleeve (81) and bearing (82) from the housing. Remove sleeve (81) and bearing (82).
