- Remove the recoil springs. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Recoil Spring - Remove and Install".
Show/hide table
Personal injury or death can result from not following the proper procedures. To avoid the possibility of injury or death, follow the established procedure. |
Show/hide table
Sudden release of spring force can cause injury. To prevent the possibility of injury, follow the procedure to relieve the spring pressure. |
- Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to the recoil spring. The weight of the recoil spring is 72 kg (160 lb).

- Put the recoil spring in position between plates (2) and (3) .
- Remove the hoist.
- Put the center of spring pilot (4) and pilot assembly (5) in alignment with the centers of plates (2) and (3) .
- Move the hydraulic cylinder enough to hold the recoil spring in position.
- Make an adjustment to nuts (6) so that the distance between plates (2) and (3) are equal at each of three legs (7) .
- Turn nuts (8) until there is a distance of 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) between nuts (8) and plate (9) .
Note: The distance between plates (2) and (3) must be equal at all times. This will prevent the spring from twisting and coming out of tool (A) .
- Put spring (1) under enough compression in order to remove nut (10). Remove nut (10) .

- Slowly release the compression on spring (1) .
- Turn nuts (6) and move plate (9) away from spring (1) .
- Put spring (1) under compression. Turn nuts (8) until the nuts are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) from plate (9). Slowly release the compression on spring (1) .
- Repeat Steps 9 through 11 until spring (1) is not under compression.
- Disconnect tool (A) from the recoil spring.
- Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to the recoil spring. Remove the recoil spring from tool (A). The weight of the recoil spring is 72 kg (160 lb).
- Remove spring pilot (4) and pilot assembly (5) .
- Remove sleeve (11) and bolt (12) .
