Note: Use tool (A) in order to assemble the recoil spring.

  1. Put pilot assembly (5) in spring (1) .

  1. Install bolt (12) in pilot assembly (5) .

  1. Put sleeve (11) on bolt (12) .

  1. Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to the recoil spring.

  1. Put the recoil spring in position between plates (2) and (3) .

  1. Remove the lifting device and the hoist.

  1. Put spring pilot (4) between plate (2) and the end of the recoil spring.

  1. Put the centers of spring pilot (4) and pilot assembly (5) in alignment with plate (2) and (3) centers.

  1. Move the hydraulic cylinder enough to hold spring (1) in position.

  1. Make an adjustment to nuts (8). Keep the distance between plates (2) and (3) equal at each of three legs (7) .

Note: The distance between plates (2) and (3) must be equal at all times. This will prevent the spring from twisting and coming out of tool (A) .

  1. Put spring (1) under compression. Bolt (12) should be in alignment with the holes in spring pilot (4) and pilot assembly (5) .

  1. Turn nuts (8) until the nuts are against plate (3) .

  1. Move plate (9) and the cylinder toward spring (1) .

  1. Put the spring under compression. The distance between the outer surfaces of spring pilot (4) and pilot assembly (5) should be 50.8 cm (20.0 inch).

  1. Install nut (10) on bolt (12) .

  1. Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to the recoil spring.

  1. Remove the recoil spring from tool (A) .

End By: Install the recoil springs. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Recoil Spring - Remove and Install".
