Problem:
Failures of 174-5290 position sensors have been reported through the product support phone system on several small off-highway truck models. This sensor group is also used on large off-highway trucks, articulated trucks, and wheel tractor scrapers. The other sensors in the family are: 131-5393 (round sensor used on WTS), and 185-4261 (rectangular sensor used on ADT's except D400E). The 174-5290 position sensors (Rectangular) is also used on WTS, and ADT's.
Solution:
The installation and bolt tightening procedure can potentially influence sensor failures.
At the first indication of a possible malfunction of the 174-5290, 131-5393, or 185-4261 position sensor on any of the above machines, call TBU Product support at 1-309-675-7790 or Cat Electronics Customer Service at 1-309-578-6529 for assistance. CSARL Dealers should call Peter Arni or Daniel Alba in Geneva (0041-22-849 4868 or 4419). They may ask that the parts be returned for inspection and arrange the issuing Parts Return Requests. Field returns are necessary for failure analysis and possible product improvement.
To reduce the likelyhood of broken switch rotors during installation please use the following procedure: Tighten one bolt 1/2 to 3/4of a turn. Next, tighten the second bolt 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn. Alternate between the two bolts until full torque is achieved.
NOTE: If the retaining clips on the bolts are removed, the position sensor can be installed, fully seated on the shaft, and the bolts tightened to torque without an alternating sequence.
