Usage:
1. Install bushing (1) in bushing (3) as follows:
a. Put the oil holes in the bushings in alignment. Install bushing (1) into bushing (3) with a press.
b. Drill two 7.67 mm (.302 in.) holes 180° apart 19.05 mm (.75 in.) deep through bushings (1) and into bushings (3). Do not drill the holes through the lubrication grooves on bushing (1).
c. Install two new pins (2) in each bushing even with the surface of bushing (1).
2. Install the O-ring seals on the bushings. Put clean oil on the O-ring seals.
3. Install one of the bushings (3) in the idler with tooling (A) and a press. Install the bolts in the bushing.
NOTE: For 943 Idler make FT578 tool for a D4-later. For 953 Idler make FT578 tool for a D7-earlier. See the chart in the tool guide for the correct dimensions.
4. Turn the idler over. Put clean oil on idler shaft (4), and install the shaft in the bushing.
5. Install the other bushing (3) in the idler with tooling (A) and a press. Install the bolts in the bushing.
6. Put tooling (B) in position on idler shaft (4) as shown, and check the end clearance between the shaft and the bushings. The clearance must be 0.76 mm (.030 in.) maximum to 0.25 mm (.010 in.) minimum.
7. Install Duo-Cone seal in bushing (3) with tooling (C).
NOTE: The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. After installation of the seals, put oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals.
8. Install the Duo-Cone seal in link (5) with tooling (C).
9. Install O-ring seal (6) on the idler shaft. Put clean oil on the O-ring seal.
10. Put 2P2506 Anti-Seize Compound on the contact surfaces of the idler shaft and link (5). Install link (5). Make sure the groove in the shaft is in alignment with the hole in the bearing.
11. Put 2P2506 Anti-Seize Compound on the contact surfaces of lock (8) and the link. Put lock (8) in position in the link, and install bolt (7) and the washer. Tighten bolt (7) to a torque of 54 N·m (40 lb.ft.). Hit lock (8) with a hammer, and tighten bolt (7) again to a torque of 70 ± 15 N·m (50 ± 11 lb.ft.).
12. Do the procedure in Steps 7 through 11 again on the opposite side of the front idler.
13. Put the front idler in a position so the idler shaft is in a vertical position. Remove the plug. Install nozzle (E), and fill the front idler with 0.26 liter (.549 pt.) of SAE 30 oil. Remove the nozzle, and install the plug. Tighten the plug to a torque of 170 ± 20 N·m (125 ± 15 lb.ft.).
14. Use tooling (D) and a press to install the bearing in guard (9). Install the bearing so it is in the center of the bearing bore.
15. Use tooling (D) to install the seal in both sides of guard (9) with the lip out as shown. Fill the opening behind the seals with 5P960 Multipurpose Type Grease.
16. Use clean grease to hold spring washer (11) in position on the inside of the guard. Install spring washer (11) in counterbore (10) as shown.
17. Install the guard on the link as shown. Install outside spring washer (12) and cap (13) as shown. Install the bolts that hold cap (13) in place, and tighten to a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb.ft.).
18. Do the procedure in Steps 14 through 17 again for the other guard.
19. Use tooling (D) and a press to install the bushings in yoke (14) and rod (15). Install the bushings so they are in the center of the bores in the yoke and rod.
20. Use tooling (D) to install the seals in the yoke and rod. Install the seals with the lip out as shown.
21. Put the rod in position on the yoke, and install pin (16) in the yoke with the hole in the pin in alignment with the bolt hole in the yoke. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of the bolt that holds pin (16) in place, and install the bolt in the yoke.
22. Put the yoke in position on the links with hoses (17) in the yoke up as shown. Install pins (18) with the hole in the pin in alignment with the bolt hole in the link. Install the bolts that hold pins (18) in place.
23. Install the guards on the yoke.
