Usage:

Master Link And Master Shoe

Sealed And Lubricated Track Assembly

Disassemble Tracks

START BY:

a. separation of tracks

1. Remove the three track shoes over the area of the track that has damage. Remove the track. See Separation Of Tracks. Put both ends of the track joint on 15.2 cm (6 in.) wood blocks.

NOTICE

As the track assembly is disassembled, do not cause damage to the parts. Put all of the parts in a position so the ends of the bushings, the thrust rings, pins and seals can not be damaged.

2. Install the 8S9978 Ram Adapter (1) of tooling (A) on the ram and the 5P2188 Pin Adapter (943) or 1P3483 Pin Adapter (953) (2) of tooling (A) on the frame so the flat side will be toward the link. Use tooling (A) as shown to push track pin (3) part of the way out of the track assembly.

3. Check the track pin for a groove (wear step) caused by wear. If the track pin does not have a groove (wear step), remove it all of the way out of the track assembly. If the track pin has a groove (wear step), push the track pin out 2/3 of its length.

NOTICE

Do not remove the track pin all of the way. Damage to the pin bore and link will be the result.

4. Remove tooling (A). Make a separation of the track pin with a cutting torch. Hit the short end of the track pin with a hammer until it is inside the bushing.

5. Remove the next track pin.

6. Put tooling (B) between the track links as shown. Push the links away from each other enough to make a separation of the track chain.

NOTICE

Use shim stock (4) as protection for the face of the seals when the track chain is pulled apart.

7. Remove thrust ring (6) from both track links. Remove seal assembly (5) from both track links only if a replacement is necessary.

8. Move tool (B) to the next set of track links as shown. Use tool (B) to push the links away from each other enough to remove link and bushing assembly (7).

NOTICE

Use shim stock as protection for the face of the seals when the link and bushing assembly is removed.

9. Install the 8S9975 Ram Adapter (8) of tooling (A) on the ram and the 7S8469 Bushing Adapter (11) of tooling (A) on the frame. Put the 2S8235 Bushing Adapter (9) of tooling (A) in the bushing of the link and bushing assembly. Install the link and bushing assembly in tooling (A) as shown, and remove link (10) from the bushing.

10. Turn the link and bushing around, and use tooling (A) as shown to remove link (12) from bushing (13).

NOTE: For information on parts reusability, see Guideline For Reusable Parts, Sealed And Lubricated Track, Form No. SEBF8022.

Assemble Tracks

NOTE: Check all of the parts of the track assembly for wear and damage. Make sure the parts are clean and dry before assembly.

1. Make the modification shown in illustration B13677X1 to a 5P2188 Pin Adapter. The modification is necessary to push the bushings in the links of the 943 track.

2. Install the 8S9971 Ram Adapter (1) of tooling (A) on the ram, and install the 9S32 Plug (2) of tooling (A) in the ram adapter. Install the changed 5P2188 Pin Adapter (943) or 1P3483 Pin Adapter (953) (6) of tooling (A) on the frame with the counterbore toward the ram. Put the 2S8235 Bushing Adapter (3) of tooling (A) in bushing (4).

3. Put clean SAE 90 oil on the outside diameter of the bushing that makes contact with the links. Use tooling (A) as shown to push bushing (4) into the bore in link (5) until the bushing makes contact with the counterbore in pin adapter (6). The bushing must extend past the outer surface of the 943 link 1.47 ± 0.25 mm (.058 ± .010 in.). The bushing must extend past the outer surface of the 953 link 1.88 ± 0.25 mm (.074 ± .010 in.).

4. Clean both ends of bushing (7) until they are clean and dry. Put clean SAE 90 oil on both ends of the bushing.

5. Make sure the seals, load rings and thrust rings are clean and dry. If the seals were removed from the links, install load rings (8) and seals (9) in the links as shown. Put clean SAE 90 oil on the lip of the seals only.

NOTICE

Do not put oil on load rings (8). Oil will cause the load rings to become larger (swell).

6. Put the 5F9447 Pilot Pin (943) or 5F9451 Pilot Pin (953) (11) of tooling (A) in the bushing with the tapered end of the pin as shown. Install thrust rings (12) on the pilot pin. Install link (10) on the pilot pin.

7. Put the assembled bushing (4) and link (5) in position on link (10) and pilot pin (11), and use tooling (A) as shown to push the bushing into link (10) until the bushing makes contact with the counterbore in pin adapter (6). Remove tooling (A).

8. If the track is to be assembled without lubricant or if lubrication tooling is available, go to Step 13. If the track is to be assembled with lubricant and lubrication tooling is not available, use a .5 in. drill to remove the rubber stopper and plastic plug from the track pins. Be sure the oil reservoir hole and crosshole are clear.

9. Put clean SAE 90 oil on rubber stopper (13), and put the rubber stopper in sleeve (14) of tooling (B) as shown.

10. Put tape (16) over the crosshole in track pin (15). Fill the track pin with clean SAE 90 oil. Use tooling (B) as shown to install rubber stopper (13) to the correct depth in track pin (15).

11. Install plastic plug (17) in the rubber stopper with the point in.

12. Do Steps 8, 9, 10 and 11 for the other track pin.

13. Remove pin adapter (6) from the frame of tooling (A). Turn the pin adapter around, and install it in the frame with the flat side toward the ram.

14. Put track pin (15) in ram adapter (1) of tooling (A) with oil hole (18) up toward the link rails as shown and with the rubber stopper on the same side as the other pins in the track.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to the thrust rings, install tooling (A) so track pin (15) will push against the large diameter of pilot pin (11).

15. Push the track pin into the link until the 9S32 Plug of tooling (A) can be installed on ram adapter (1). Remove the tape from the crosshole. Push the track pin into the link until 19.05 mm (.75 in.) of the pin is shown. Remove pilot pin (11) from the press arrangement.

16. Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material on track pin (15) and in the pin bore of link (5). Do not put the 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material closer than 13 mm (.512 in.) from the seal counterbore. Install the pin within 5 minutes.

NOTICE

Use a maximum press force of: 943 - 405 kN (91,000 lb.), 953 - 560 kN (126,000 lb.) to install the track pins. The press force must be as low as possible to get an end play of less than 0.13 mm (.512 in.). The end play is between the bushing and the thrust ring. Too much press force can damage the thrust rings.

17. Push track pin (15) into the track assembly so it extends the same distance from both sides of the links. The track pin must not extend beyond the links more than: 943 - 3.12 mm (.123 in.) on either side, 953 - 3.05 mm (.120 in.) on either side.

18. Put tooling (C) between the links. Push the links apart far enough to let the links and bushings go together.

19. Make sure both ends of bushing (4), the seals and thrust rings (19) are clean and free of dirt or foreign material. Put clean SAE 90 oil on the seals and the ends of bushing (4). Install thrust rings (19).

NOTICE

Do not put oil on the load ring of the seal.

20. Put shim stock (20) over the face of the seals as shown as protection for the face of the seals from damage. Push the track chain together.

21. Install pilot pin (11) to keep the links, bushing and thrust rings in alignment. Remove shim stock (20) as pilot pin (11) is installed. Remove tooling (C).

22. Put track pin (21) in tooling (A) with the oil hole up toward the link rails as shown and with the rubber stopper on the same side as the other pins in the track.

NOTICE

To prevent damage to the thrust rings, install tooling (A) so track pin (21) will push against the large diameter of pilot pin (11).

23. Push the track pin into the link until the 9S32 Plug (2) of tooling (A) can be installed on the ram adapter. Remove the tape from the crosshole. Push the track pin into the link until 19.05 mm (.75 in.) of the pin is shown. Remove pilot pin (11) from the press arrangement.

24. Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material on track pin (21) and in the pin bore of link (22). Do not put the 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material closer than 13 mm (.512 in.) from the seal counterbore. Install the pin within 5 minutes.

25. Push track pin (21) into the track assembly with tooling (A) so it extends the same distance from both sides of the links. The track pins must not extend beyond the links more than: 943 - 3.12 mm (.123 in.) on either side, 953 - 3.05 mm (.120 in.) on either side.

26. If the track is to be assemble with lubrication and the track pins were not filled with SAE 90 oil during assembly, fill the track pins as follows:

a. Push the plug in the rubber stopper into the drilled passage of the track pin.

b. Use tooling (D) to fill the pins with oil.

c. Install the plug in the rubber stopper.

27. Install the track. See Connection Of Tracks.

28. Install the three shoes on the track assembly. Put SAE 30 oil on the threads, body and washer face of the track bolts. Install the track bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 170 ± 40 N·m (125 ± 30 lb.ft.); then tighten the bolts 120° ± 5° more.
