30. Remove levers (38) from the shafts. Use tooling (C), if necessary, to remove levers (38) from the shafts. Remove the keys for levers (38) from the shafts.

NOTICE

Do not push the shafts out of the housing until the keys for levers (37) are removed from the shafts. The keys in the shafts will damage the bearings in the housing if the keys are not removed from the shafts.

31. Slide levers (37) on the shafts, and remove the keys for levers (37) from the shafts. Remove the shafts and levers (37) from the housing.

NOTICE

Do not damage the housing when bearings (40) are removed. Put a support in the area of the bearings so the housing will not be broken when the bearings are removed.

32. Remove bearings (40) from the housing.

Assemble Forward-Reverse Controls

NOTICE

Do not damage the housing when bearings (1) are installed. Put a support in the area of the bearings so the housing will not be broken when the bearings are installed. When the bearings are installed, push on the end of the bearing that has identification.

1. Use tooling (A) to install bearings (1) in the housing as shown.

NOTE: Levers (2) and (3) and the upper shaft are for direction control. Levers (5) and (6) and the lower shaft are for the governor control.

2. Use tool (B) to install the snap rings on the end of the shafts. Install washers (4) on the shafts, and install the shafts in the housing. When the shafts are installed in the housing, install levers (2) and (6) on the shafts as shown.

3. Install the four keys in the shafts. Put levers (2), (3), (5) and (6) in position over the keys. Put levers (3) and (5) in a position to stop end play of the shafts, but still let the shafts turn freely. Tighten the bolts in the levers to hold the levers tightly on the shafts.

NOTICE

When bearings (7) are installed in lever (8), push on the end of the bearing that has identification.

4. Use tooling (A) to install bearings (7) in lever (8).

5. Put discs (9) and yoke (10) in position on lever (8) as shown. Install shaft (11) through the yoke, discs and lever, and install collar (12) on the shaft with the gap in the collar in alignment with the hole in the shaft.

6. Install roll pin (14) through the collar and shaft.

7. Install one flat washer (13), belleville washers (15), the other flat washer (13) and nut (16) on the shaft as shown.

8. Install lever (8) in a vise as shown. Install knob (17) on the direction control rod.

9. Fasten tool (C) to the direction control rod as shown. Use tool (C) to measure the force needed to move the direction control through its movement range. Adjust nut (16) until the force needed to move the direction control rod is 21 ± 4 N (4.7 ± .9 lb.). Remove knob (17).

10. Put the lever assembly in position on the housing, and install shaft (18) with the hole in the shaft in alignment with hole (19) in the housing. Install the roll pin to hold shaft (18) in place.

11. Connect rod (20) to lever (8).

12. Put bail (21) in position on the housing behind direction control rod (22), and install pin (23) to hold it in place. Install the cotter pin in pin (23).

13. Put lever assembly (25) in position on the housing as shown, and install pin (24) with the hole for the roll pin in alignment with hole (26) in the housing. Install pin (24) with the hole for the roll pin nearer to end (Y) of the pin as shown. Dimension "X" = 24 mm (.945 in.).

14. Install the roll pin in hole (26) to hold pin (24) in place.

15. Put rod end (27) in position on lever assembly (25), and install pin (28) and the cotter pin to hold it in place.

16. Install the control housing through the top of the console as shown.

17. When the control housing is put into position in the console, be sure direction control rod (30) is in front of the cross shaft for the governor control as shown. Install eight bolts (31) that hold the control housing to the console.

18. Connect governor control rod (29) to the lever as shown.

21. Install cover (35) on the top of the console.

22. Check and adjust the force needed to pull safety lever (25) over center as follows:

a. Move direction control rod (22) to the park position.

b. Use two 3/8"-16 NC nuts and 3/8 in. washers to fasten tool (C) to safety lever (25) as shown.

c. Use tool (C) to measure the force needed to pull the safety lever over center. The force must be 40 ± 5 N (9 ± 1.1 lb.).

d. Go to Step 23 if the force is correct. If the force is not correct, remove air duct (34).

e. Remove spring (33), and disconnect rod end (27) from the safety lever. Loosen the locknut, and turn the rod end to change the force needed to pull the safety lever over center. One half turn of rod end (27) will change the force approximately 22 N (5 lb.). After the adjustment is made, tighten the locknut on rod end (27), connect the rod end to the safety lever, and install spring (33). Check the force again, and when the force is correct install air duct (34).

23. Put horn wires (36) through the hole in the console.

24. Install knobs (17) on the direction control rod and governor control rod.

25. Install cover (37) on the front of the console.

26. Install the knob on safety lever (25).

27. Connect governor control rod (38) to the lever.

28. Connect horn wires (36) to the harness.
