The Steering Cylinder Rods May Have Longitudinal Surface Cracks Caterpillar

The Steering Cylinder Rods May Have Longitudinal Surface Cracks

Usage:

EXCAVATORSM312 (6TL),
M315 (7ML),
M318 (8AL) EXCAVATORS

Problem:

The 5W-5698 Rod of the steering cylinder on certain excavators may have longitudinal surface cracks. These cracks have no impact on the structural requirements of the rod. However, these cracks may cause external leakage of the steering cylinder group.

Solution:

All steering cylinder rods of the affected product must be replaced. The replacement of the cylinder rod is described in the Disassembly and Assembly section of the Service Manual. (Reference: Power Train D&A - Remove and Install Tie Rods; Machine Systems D&A - Remove and Install Steering Cylinder).

Refer to Table (1) for a list of the affected machines.

The 5W-5698 Cylinder Rods that are within the parts system are not affected by the longitudinal surface cracks.

A product improvement program (PIP) is forthcoming in the near future.
