Usage:
Problem:
A dye is added to the transmission, steering and hoist system oil of Articulated Trucks at the factory. The purpose of the dye is to make the detection of oil leaks easier. However dyes could be the source of the high particle counts in newer machines. If no other indicators are present the dye might be the source of high particle count. If a particle counter that uses light reflective technology is subsequently used to measure the cleanliness of the oil, a false reading may result. A particle counter of this type may see the dye as contamination. Both the Caterpillar 138-9656 and 188-0645 Particle Counters use light refraction technology. S.O.S equipment that is recommended by Caterpillar also uses light reflective technology.
Solution:
This TIB is for awareness. The problem is under investigation. All machines are checked at the factory and cleanliness levels are within specification when the machines are dispatched. Unless another problem is suspected, the dye could be the source of an unexpected high particle count.
