Usage:

AGRICULTURAL TRACTORSCHALLENGER 65, 65B (7YC),
CHALLENGER 65C (2ZJ),
CHALLENGER 70C (2YL),
CHALLENGER 75 (4CJ),
CHALLENGER 75C (4KK),
CHALLENGER 85C (9TK) TRACTORS

Problem:

There have been reports of slow or weak steering on low hour Challenger tractors. Diagnosis and adjustments prove the problem is not in the steering cutoff valve or elsewhere in the pilot system. The problem usually relates to one side.

Solution:

The cause can be low torque on one of the combination makeup and relief valves mounted in the pump head. There are two valves in each pump head. Each valve has a hex head. The smaller hex is on the plug over the end of the valve body. The larger (metric) hex is the valve body itself. (See Illustration 1.) The larger hex should be tightened to 190.40 ± 14.96 N·m (140 ± 11 lb ft).

NOTE: The larger hex is metric. Use caution to avoid rounding the edges when tightening the larger hex.
