Blowby Measurement For the Above Turbocharged Engines

Usage:

ENGINES3054 (5HK) MACHINE ENGINES, 3054 (6FK) INDUSTRIAL ENGINES, 3054 (4ZK) GENERATOR SET ENGINES

THIS TIB REPLACES THE AUGUST 9, 1995 ENGINE TIB, COMPONENT CODE 1317. DESTROY THE AUGUST 9, 1995 TIB. IT WILL NOT APPEAR IN THE QUARTERLY INDEX.

Problem:

Some customers perceive the blowby emitted from 3054 turbocharged engines as excessive. Excessive blowby is sometimes thought to indicate excessive wear within an engine. In general, that is NOT a true indication with the 3054 turbocharged engine. Concern is justified only if an engine has excessive blowby AND excessive oil consumption.

Solution:

Allow an engine to run until the first oil change (250 SMU) before doing anything. Piston rings will seat, or bed, during this initial oil change interval.

If a customer believes his engine's blowby is excessive after the initial oil change interval, measure blowby with the Caterpillar Blowby/ Air Flow Indicator Group (8T-2700). Blowby in the range of 100 ± 30 L/min (stabilized at rated speed and load) is considered normal. If blowby exceeds this range, consider which generation engine you are working with before taking any action.

There have been 3 distinct piston and ring configurations used in the 3054 turbocharged engines since first production. Each configuration has different blowby and oil consumption characteristics as described below:

1.First production 3054 turbocharged engines (5HK1 - 14332, 6FK1 - 1001) had a 0.5 percent (ratio of oil consumed / fuel consumed) oil consumption ring package. This configuration produced few blowby complaints from customers. Blowby in excess of 130 L/min alone is not an indication of an engine problem and no action needs to be taken. If blowby is higher than 130 L/min and oil consumption is greater than 0.5 percent (follow the Service Warranty Guide, section 6.5 to measure and track oil consumption), then 107-2553 Piston Assemblies and 112-7020 Ring Kits may be installed to solve the problem.
2.Effective with 3054 (5HK14333) Machine Engine and 3054 (6FK1002) Industrial Engine, the same piston and ring package used in the 3054 (4ZK) Generator Set Engines from first production was introduced to lower the oil consumption to 0.2 percent. This piston and ring package, although dryer in terms of oil consumption, made the engine breath heavier, so blowby levels were elevated. Blowby in excess of 130 L/min alone is not an indication of an engine problem and no action needs to be taken. If blowby is higher than 130 L/min and oil consumption is greater than 0.2 percent (follow the Service Warranty Guide, section 6.5 to measure and track oil consumption), then 112-7020 Ring Kits may be installed to solve the problem.
3.Effective with 3054 (5HK23141) Machine Engines, 3054 (6FK1506) Industrial Engines, and 3054 (4ZK2496) Generator Set Engines, the ring gap was reduced. This change lowers the blowby to the acceptable range indicated above while maintaining 0.2 percent oil consumption capability.
