Performance Of Rotor Axle Seal Depends On Correct Shimming Procedure {5634}

Usage:

RR-250 (6ED) Road Reclaimers;
SS-250 (6DD) Soil Stabilizers

Reference: "Direction Of Drum Rotation Can Be Changed; Chain Case Hub Must Be Shimmed Correctly" for RR-250 Road Reclaimers and SS-250 Soil Stabilizers appears in this issue.

Correct position of the shims and the correct torque on retaining nuts will prevent loosening of these nuts due to chain case rotation. Maintaining correct seal position will prevent oil transfer from the rotor axle to the chain case. The following procedure will make sure the correct seal position is maintained.

Procedure To Shim The Chain Case Hub

1. Install 77-8608 Spacer (1) and 81-6838 Hub (2). See Illustration 1.

2. Install 77-3983 Washer (3) and one of the plugs (8) into the keyway. (Note: Before assembly, modify the plug as shown in Illustration 2).

Illustration 2. Plug (8) modified and installed in position (D). (L) 3.0 mm (.12 in). (M) 5.0 mm (.19 in). (N) 3.0 mm (.12 in).

3. Apply either 9S-3265 or 4C-4031 Thread Sealant to nut (6) from 98-0743 Axle Mounting Kit. Install nut (6) so that the nut threads cover plug (8) in position (D). Tighten nut to a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft). Back nut off one flat and lock in place by bending two tabs of lockwasher (7) over flats.

4. Modify the second plug (8) as shown in Illustration 3. Install the plug into the keyway and assemble shim (4) and seal nut (5). Be sure that the nut threads cover the plug.

Illustration 3. Second plug (8) modified and installed in position (E). (L) 3.0 mm (.12 in). (M) 5.0 mm (.19 in). (P) 1.5 mm (.06 in).

5. Assemble seal plate (9), axle (C), the sprocket, and the cover.

6. Apply a light coat of grease to the surface of seal nut (5) in area shown by large arrow.

7. Install the axle and sprocket assembly. Use only four of the eight bolts to draw the cover down. Tighten the bolts to 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

8. Remove the four bolts, cover, sprocket, and axle assembly.

9. Check the seal surface. If the mark left imprinted in the grease on the seal surface is less than 3.18 mm (.125 in), shim(s) (4) must be added. If the mark is greater than 6.35 mm (.250 in), shim(s) (4) must be removed.

10. Repeat Steps 3 through 9 until a 3.18 to 6.35 mm (.125 to .250 in) wide mark is achieved.

11. Tighten seal nut (5) to 135 N·m (100 ft lb) and lock in place by bending three tabs of lockwasher (7) over the flats.
