Direction Of Drum Rotation Can Be Changed; Chain Case Hub Must Be Shimmed Correctly {5634}

Usage:

RR-250 (6ED) Road Reclaimers;
SS-250 (6DD) Soil Stabilizers

Reference: Disassembly & Assembly Manual, Form KEBR1243, "RR-250 Reclaimer & SS-250 Soil Stabilizer Vehicle Systems".

The direction of drum rotation can be changed from the conventional direction (upward cut) to a climbing motion (downward cut). To change the drum rotation, follow the procedure in this article.

This modification affects the 7X-2201 LH Chain And Case Assembly, 7X-2202 RH Chain And Case Assembly, 7X-8889 Lubrication Circulation Group, 7X-9576 Rotor Drive Group, and 7X-9589 Rotor Hood Group.

Procedure To Change Drum Rotation

Use the procedures in the Reference to remove and install the components.

1. Remove the rotor drive axles and chains.

2. Remove the hood and chain cases.

3. Remove the cutter drum.

4. Remove the lubrication and drain lines from the differential.

5. Turn the axle end-to-end (180 degrees) from the original position on a standard upward cutting machine.

6. Replace the lubrication lines on the axle. Install the inlet line in the higher port to the left (this was the return port prior to disassembly). Install the return line on the lower right port (this was the inlet port prior to disassembly).

7. Move the breather line to the top.

8. Install the chain cases and hood.

9. Install the drum so that the cutting action will be in a downward direction.

10. Install the rotor drive axles and chains.

NOTE: To ensure that the 98-0743 Axle Mounting Kit is installed correctly, follow the "Procedure To Shim The Chain Case Hub" listed in this article.

11. Loosen four bolts (X) that fasten the mounting brackets for rotor transmission to slotted holes in frame.

Illustration 2. Alignment of drive lines.

12. Position rotor transmission so that the drive lines on either end of transmission equally share the mis-alignment from the PTO shaft to the rotor axle pinion shaft. Tighten bolts and nuts.

13. Install the idler on the opposite side of the chain case.

14. Check all lubrication levels for the rotor, bearings, rotor transmission, and chain case.

NOTE: If a deep-mix rotor is to be installed in an RR-250 Road Reclaimer, the 81-6850 Bar (part of the 7X-9610 Breaker Bar Group) must be removed.

Procedure To Shim The Chain Case Hub

1. Install 77-8608 Spacer (1) and 81-6838 Hub (2). See Illustration 3.

2. Install 77-3983 Washer (3) and one of the plugs (8) into the keyway. (Note: Before assembly, modify the plug as shown in Illustration 4).

Illustration 4. Plug (8) modified and installed in position (D). (L) 3.0 mm (.12 in). (M) 5.0 mm (.19 in). (N) 3.0 mm (.12 in).

3. Apply either 9S-3265 or 4C-4031 Thread Sealant to nut (6) from 98-0743 Axle Mounting Kit. Install nut (6) so that the nut threads cover plug (8) in position (D). Tighten nut to a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft). Back nut off one flat and lock in place by bending two tabs of lockwasher (7) over flats.

4. Modify the second plug (8) as shown in Illustration 5. Install the plug into the keyway and assemble shim (4) and seal nut (5). Be sure that the nut threads cover the plug.

5. Assemble seal plate (9), axle (C), the sprocket, and the cover.

6. Apply a light coat of grease to the surface of seal nut (5) in area shown by large arrow.

7. Install the axle and sprocket assembly. Use only four of the eight bolts to draw the cover down. Tighten the bolts to 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

8. Remove the four bolts, cover, sprocket, and axle assembly.

9. Check the seal surface. If the mark left imprinted in the grease on the seal surface is less than 3.18 mm (.125 in), shim(s) (4) must be added. If the mark is greater than 6.35 mm (.250 in), shim(s) (4) must be removed.

10. Repeat Steps 3 through 9 until a 3.18 to 6.35 mm (.125 to .250 in) wide mark is achieved.

11. Tighten seal nut (5) to 135 N·m (100 ft lb) and lock in place by bending three tabs of lockwasher (7) over the flats.
