Steering Metering Pump

Usage:

Remove & Install Steering Metering Pump

1. Remove the cover from the front of the cab.

2. Disconnect oil lines (1), (2), (3) and (4) from steering metering pump (5).

3. Remove ring (6) from the coupler. Remove pin (7) that holds the coupler to the steering shaft.

Typical Example

4. Remove four bolts (8) from inside the cab that hold the steering metering pump in place. Remove the steering metering pump.

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the steering metering pump.

5. Put steering metering pump (5) in position on the machine. Make sure the coupler slides on the steering shaft.

6. Install pin (7) that holds the coupler to the steering shaft.

7. Install ring (6) to hold the pin in place.

8. Install four bolts (8) from the inside of the cab to hold the steering metering pump in place.

NOTE: Oil lines (1) and (2) are from the steering cylinders. Oil line (3) is from the steering system hydraulic tank. Oil line (4) is from the steering pump.

9. Connect oil lines (1), (2), (3) and (4) to the steering metering pump.

10. Install the cover on the front of the cab.

Disassemble & Assemble Steering Metering Pump

Start By:

a. remove hand metering pump

1. Be sure the outside of the hand metering unit is thoroughly clean and free of dirt and debris prior to disassembly. Place alignment marks down the entire length of the metering pump to insure proper assembly.

NOTE: There is a roll pin pressed into the bottom of bolt (2). The roll pin prevents the check ball, located beneath bolt (2), from entering passage (1).

NOTE: When six bolts (3) and bolt (2) are removed, the gerotor assembly can be separated.

2. Remove six bolts (3) and bolt (2). Remove the gerotor assembly.

3. Remove end cap (11) from gerotor housing (9).

4. Remove spacer plate (4), drive (5), spacer (6) and gerotor (8) from gerotor housing (9).

5. Remove bushing (12).

6. Remove check ball (13), located behind bushing (12).

NOTICE

Use care not to bind the spool and sleeve assembly (14) in the housing during removal. Rotate the spool and sleeve assembly when removing from the housing.

7. Remove spool and sleeve assembly (14) from the housing.

8. Remove O-ring seal (15) from the housing.

NOTE: Put identification marks on control sleeve (17) and spool (16) for assembly purposes.

NOTICE

Use care not to bind spool (16) in control sleeve (17) during removal. Rotate the control sleeve while removing it from the spool.

9. Remove ring (18) and pin (19). Slide control sleeve (17) off of spool (16) far enough to clear centering springs (20). Rotate sleeve (17) while removing it all of the way off of spool (16).

NOTE: Centering spring kit (20) consists of six centering springs.

10. Remove centering spring (20) from control spool (16).

11. Remove two races (22), needle thrust bearing (23) and seal (21) from the housing.

12. Remove seal (24) from the housing.

NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the metering pump.

NOTICE

Be sure all parts of the metering pump are clean and free of dirt and debris. Do not use cloth or paper towel to dry parts. Lint or other material can get into the hydraulic system and cause component damage. Replace any parts that have scratches or burrs that could result in leakage. Check the condition of the O-ring seals. If any seals are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

13. Use tooling (A) to install seal (24) into the housing. Put a light film of clean oil on the sealing lip of seal (24).

14. Put the housing in a vertical position.

15. Put a thin coat of 1U6396 O-ring Assembly Compound seal (21). Install seal (21) into the counterbore of the housing.

16. Install two bearing races (22) and needle thrust bearing (23).

NOTICE

Use care not to bind spool (16) in control sleeve (17) during assembly. Rotate the control sleeve while installing the sleeve over the spool. The spool should rotate smoothly in the control sleeve with finger tip force applied to the splined end.

17. Put a thin coat of clean hydraulic oil on spool (16) and control sleeve (17). Rotate spool (16) while sliding control sleeve (17) over the spool.

18. Align the spring slots (and the marks made at disassembly) in spool (16) with the notches in sleeve (17).

NOTICE

Extended edge (V) of the centering springs must face toward control sleeve (17). Position the centering springs in the slots of spool (16) so that they are flush with the outside diameter of sleeve (17).

19. Install centering springs (20) into spool (16) and the notches of sleeve (17).

20. Install ring (18) and pin (19). Make sure the edges of pin (19) are flush with the outside diameter of sleeve (17).

NOTICE

When installing spool and sleeve assembly (14) into the housing, make sure all components stay positioned. The assembly should move freely when rotating and gently pushing sleeve assembly (14) into the housing. Make sure pin (19) stays in potion and does not fall drop into the housing discharge groove. When properly installed, sleeve assembly (14) should seat on bearing race (22), and rotate freely in the housing.

21. Install spool and sleeve assembly (14) into the housing.

22. Install check ball (13) and bushing (12) into the housing.

23. Put a thin coat of 1U6396 O-ring Seal Compound on O-ring seal (15). Install the O-ring seal in the housing.

24. Install spacer plate (4). Be sure the bolt holes in the spacer plate align with the tapered holes in the housing.

NOTICE

Prior to completion of assembly, the metering pump must be timed. The required timing is the correct relationship (positioning) between pin (19), gerotor (8), and gerotor housing (9). One end of pin (19) must point toward the greatest opening ("star valley") between gerotor (8) and gerotor housing (9), while the opposite end of pin (19) is pointing to the area of least clearance. Since pin (19) cannot be seen after drive (5) has been installed, it will be necessary to place a mark on the gear end of drive (5) to indicate the position the position and alignment of the pin. Be sure the alignment marks on the exterior of the metering pump are in the same alignment as before the disassembly procedure.

25. Put a thin coat of 1U6396 O-ring Assembly Compound on O-ring seals (7) and (10). Install the O-ring seals in gerotor housing (9). Install gerotor (8) in gerotor housing (9). Put the gerotor in position on space plate (4). Align the "star valleys." Keep the gerotor and drive engaged while aligning the bolt holes in the housing and gerotor assembly.

26. Install spacer (6) in gerotor housing (9).

27. Install cap (11) in its original position.

28. Install bolt (2) in its original position.

29. Install bolts (3).

30. Use the sequence shown to the illustration to tighten bolts (3) and (2) to a torque of 15 N·m ± 5 (11 ± 4 lb ft).

31. Again, use the sequence shown in the illustration to tighten bolts (3) and (2) to a torque of 30 N·m ± 5 (22 ± 4 lb ft).

End By:

a. install the metering pump
