Steering Control Valve

Usage:

Remove & Install Steering Control Valve

NOTE: Put identification marks on all of the hoses attached to the control valve for proper installation.

1. Drain the oil from the steering system.

2. Remove the bolts that hold manifold (2) to the control valve. Remove the O-ring from manifold (2).

3. Disconnect hose assembly (1).

4. Disconnect four hose assemblies (4).

5. Remove four bolts that hold hose assembly (3). Remove the O-ring from the hose assembly.

6. Remove the four bolts that hold hose assemblies (5) and (6). Remove the O-ring seals from the hose assemblies (5) and (6).

NOTE: Use two persons to remove the control valve and plate. The weight of the control valve and plate is approximately 33 kg (72 lb).

7. Remove the bolts that hold plate (7) to the frame and remove the control valve.

8. Remove plate (7) from the control valve.

NOTE: The following steps are for installing the steering control valve. Check the condition of all O-ring seals and components. Use new parts to replace any components that appear worn or damaged. Make sure the O-ring seal is properly seated in the end of each hose assembly before tightening.

9. Install plate (7) onto the control valve.

10. Install the control valve and plate (7) to the frame.

11. Connect hose assemblies (5) and (6) to the control valve.

12. Connect hose assembly (3) to the control valve.

13. Connect four hose assemblies (4) to the control valve.

14. Connect hose assembly (1) to the control valve.

15. Install the O-ring and manifold (2) onto the control valve.

16. Fill the steering hydraulic tank with oil to the correct level. See the Operation & Maintenance Manual.

Disassemble & Assemble Steering Control Valve

Start By:

a. remove steering control valve

1. Remove the fittings from the steering control valve.

2. Remove plugs (2), (3), and (4) from steering control valve (5). Remove the cover plate from port (1). Remove the seals from the cover plate and the plugs.

3. Remove the orifice from port (8). Tag the orifice for proper installation.

4. Remove valve (13) and spring (12).


NOTICE

Step 5 does not apply to later model trucks. Later model trucks do not have valve assembly (6).


5. Remove valve assembly (6) and seal (7).

6. Remove bolts (9), bolts (10) and covers (11) from both ends of the steering control valve.

7. Remove plate (14). Remove six O-ring seals (24) from the plate.

8. Remove stops (15), springs (16), springs (17), and guides (18), from each end of spool (19). Remove spool (19).

9. Remove spring (23) and spool assembly (20).

10. Remove the orifices from ports (21) and (22). Tag the orifices for proper installation.

11. Remove plate (29). Remove four O-ring seals (30) from the plate.

12. Remove stop (27) and spring (26) from spool (25). Remove spool (25) from the steering control valve.

13. Use tooling (A) to remove valve assemblies (28) from each end of the steering control valve.

14. Remove orifices from spool (25) and from both ends of spool (19). Tag the orifices for proper installation.

15. Disassemble valve assemblies (28) as follows:

NOTE: A small amount of spring pressure is present behind washer (32) and is released when nut (31) is removed.

a. Remove nut (31), washer (32), and spring (34). Remove O-ring seal (36). Remove spool (37) from body (35).

NOTE: A small amount of spring pressure is present behind body (43).

b. Remove body (43) from spool (37). Remove spring (39) and spool (38) from spool (37).

c. Remove O-ring seal (42), screw (33), spring (41), and valve (40) from body (43).

16. Disassemble valve assembly (20) as follows:

a. Remove retaining rings (51) and (52) and pins (54) and (55). Remove stop (50), spring (49), and spool (48) from spool (47).

b. Remove orifice (53) from stop (50).

c. Remove body (56) from spool (47).

d. Remove O-ring seal (46), screw (44), spring (57), and ball (45) from body (56).


NOTICE

Step 17 does not apply to later model trucks. Later model trucks do not have valve assembly (6).


17. Remove screw (61), spring (60), and valve (59) from body (58) of valve assembly (6). [Later trucks may not have valve assembly (6)].

NOTE: The following steps are for assembly of the steering control valve. Put a light coat of clean oil on all seals and parts before assembly.

18. Install valve (59), spring (60), and screw (61) in body (58) of valve assembly (6).

19. Assemble spool assembly (20) as follows:

a. Install ball (45), spring (57), and screw (44) in body (56). Install O-ring seal (46) on body (56).

b. Install body (56) in spool (47).

c. Install orifice (53) in stop (50). Tighten the orifice to a torque of 5 ± 1 N·m (45 ± 9 lb in).

d. Install spool (48) and pin (55) in spool (47). Install retaining ring (51) on spool (47) to hold the pin in place.

e. Install spring (49), stop (50), and pin (54) in spool (47). Install retaining ring (52) on the spool to hold pin (54) in place.

20. Assemble valve assembly (28) as follows:

a. Install valve (40), spring (41), and screw (33) in body (43). Install O-ring seal (42) on body (43).

b. Install spool (38), spring (39), and body (43) in spool (37). Tighten the body to a torque of 20 ± 2 N·m (15 ± 1.5 lb ft).

c. Install spool (37) and spring (34) in body (35). Install washer (32) in body (35) with the chamfered side towards the spring. Put 9S3263 Thread Lock on nut (31) and install it on screw (33). Tighten the nut to a torque of 15 ± 2 N·m (11 ± 1.5 lb ft).

d. Install O-ring seal (36) on body (35).

21. Install the orifices in spool (25) and in both ends of spool (19). Tighten the orifices to a torque of 5 ± 1 N·m (45 ± 9 lb in).

22. Install valve assemblies (28) in each end of the steering control valve.

23. Install spool (25) in the steering control valve. Install spring (26) and stop (27) on spool (25).

24. Install four O-ring seals (30) in plate (29). Install plate (29) on the steering control valve.

25. Install the orifices in ports (21) and (22). Tighten the orifices to a torque of 5 ± 1 N·m (45 ± 9 lb in).

26. Install spool assembly (20) and spring (23).

27. Install spool (19) in the steering control valve. Install the large diameter of guides (18) toward the spool and install springs (17) and (16) and stops (15) on spool (19).

28. Install six O-ring seals (24) in plate (14). Install the plate on the steering control valve.

29. Install covers (11), bolts (10), and bolts (9) on each end of the steering control valve. Tighten bolts (10) to a torque of 80 ± 10 N·m (60 ± 7 lb ft), and tighten bolts (9) to a torque of 25 ± 3 N·m (18 ± 2 lb ft).

30. Install seal (7) and valve assembly (6) in the steering control valve. Tighten the valve to a torque of 30 ± 3 N·m (22 ± 2 lb ft).

31. Install spring (12) and valve (13).

32. Install the orifice in port (8). Tighten the orifice to a torque of 5 ± 1 N·m (45 ± 9 lb in).

33. Install the seals on plugs (2), (3), and (4), and on the cover plate for port (1). Install the plugs and cover plate. Tighten plug (3) to a torque of 25 ± 3 N·m (18 ± 2 lb ft). Tighten plug (2) to a torque of 60 ± 5 N·m (44 ± 4 lb ft).

34. Install the fittings in steering control valve (5).
