Under some conditions, it is possible for oil to leak past the O-ring seal on the cage assembly. This can be the result when a large number of shims are needed to get the correct end play on the worm gear. The thickness of these shims causes the O-ring seal on the cage assembly to be in a position next to the chamfer on the housing assembly. When the O-ring seal is in this position there can be oil leakage.
To prevent this oil leakage, install the shims at both ends of the housing assembly. See the illustration. The same number and thickness of shims will be used as before, but only half the thickness of shims should be installed between the cage assembly and the housing assembly. Install the remainder of the shims between the housing assembly and the bracket assembly.
Install shims at these locations.
