New Engine Information Plates Require More Information{1000}

Usage:

3100, 3300, And 3400 Truck Engines

The former 4W-5140 Parts Service Engine Information Half Plate provided a means of identifying rerate information on the engine. This plate has been canceled and replaced by Product Specific Engine Information Plates.

The new engine information plates require more information than the former plate. Dealers are responsible for stamping the information on the new plates, which because of a change in the way Caterpillar is starting to configure engines, requires some explanation and instructions.

Chart A lists the new Product Specific Engine Information Plates part numbers, their usage. Information about how to correctly stamp and install the new plates follows the chart.

The new engine information plates are designed to completely replace the 9L-6531 Metal Engine Information Plate or the 115-5852 Engine Information Decal. The new plates should be installed when the original plate or decal is lost or when an engine is rerated. The new plates can be ordered through the normal parts order system.

Use the following Steps to order and install a new engine information plate.

1. Identify and order the appropriate product specific information plate through your normal part ordering system.

NOTE: The new engine information plate being ordered is the Engine Information Plate that mounts on the valve cover or air intake manifold. The new engine information plate should not be confused with the Engine Serial Number Plate mounted on the block. Engine Serial Number Plates can not be ordered, nor should they be modified in any way.

2. When stamping information on the new plate, use 3.0 mm (.12 in) maximum block figures. After stamping the information on the new plate, flatten the plate. Install the new plate in place of the existing information plate or decal, or in the case of a lost plate/decal, in the same area as the original plate/decal. Completely clean the area where the new plate is to be installed. Use 8T-9021 Adhesive to install the new plate.

3. OBTAINING INFORMATION FOR A LOST OR STOLEN PLATE:

If a plate is being replaced because the original plate was lost or stolen, it will be necessary to access engine information from the Caterpillar Technical Marketing Information System (TMI). Prior to accessing this information, it will be necessary to obtain the engine serial number from the Engine Serial Number Plate located on the engine block.

4. Chart B lists the information that is required to complete the new plate and where to find that information.

5. OBTAINING INFORMATION FOR A RERATED ENGINE:

If an engine information plate is being replaced because of a rerated engine, all the information which remains the same (Serial Number, Engine Model, etc.) will have to be stamped on the new plate. The rerated information can be determined from the TMI (see PROCEDURE TO FIND INFORMATION TO RERATE). Then stamp the information on the new plate and install the new plate as instructed in Step 2.

This will display current ratings and new ratings. Then using the Serial Number, performance specification, and arrangement number, you will be able to identify parts and specifications that need to be changed. If the TMI information is not complete, call the appropriate (3100, 3300, etc.) Caterpillar Customer Value Analyst for assistance.
