Usage:
3176B (9CK),
3406E (5EK) Truck Engines Equipped With An Engine Retarder
Some of these engines will log cylinder fault diagnostic codes (1-11, 2-11, etc.) as a result of using the engine retarder. The diagnostic codes are usually logged just as the engine retarder is turning off. These diagnostic codes have no effect on the vehicles' performance, but the vehicles are brought in for service because the diagnostic lamp comes on. Frequently this results in the electronic control module (ECM) being replaced. This is NOT necessary.
To fix this problem, check for and repair any loose connections between the retarder solenoid wires and the solenoids. In addition, the NOV95 software has an improved cylinder fault logging strategy, so FLASH the ECM with NOV95 software. This solution is only valid for vehicles that are NOT experiencing any performance problems.
