False Logging Of Engine Retarder Diagnostic Codes{1900,1901,1119}

Usage:

3176B (9CK),
3406E (5EK) Truck Engines

Some 3176B and 3406E Truck Engines that are NOT equipped with an engine retarder have active or logged retarder solenoid diagnostic codes (121-05, 121-06, 122-05, and 122-06). These diagnostic codes have no effect on the vehicles' performance, but the vehicles are brought in for service because the diagnostic lamp is on. Frequently, when troubleshooting this problem, the service technician disconnects all wires from the electronic control module (ECM) that relate to the engine retarder solenoids and dash switches. However, the problem may remain, and the technician replaces the ECM. This is NOT necessary.

To fix this problem, FLASH the ECM with NOV95 software. Then, program the newly added customer specified parameter "Engine Retarder Minimum Vehicle Speed" to 127 mph. This will prevent the ECM from attempting to turn on the engine retarder and logging a diagnostic code on vehicles that are not equipped with an engine retarder. For vehicles that ARE equipped with an engine retarder, use the troubleshooting procedure given in the Electronic Troubleshooting Guide, SENR5582.
