Start By:
- Remove the rocker shaft and the pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrod - Remove".
- Remove the front cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Cover - Remove".
- Remove the camshaft position sensor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Sensors - Remove and Install".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
- Turn the crankshaft to top center compression stroke for the No. 1 piston. Install the timing bolt in the flywheel. This is for timing during installation.
- Ensure that the timing marks on the following gears are aligned: the camshaft drive gear, the idler gear and the crankshaft gear.

- Wire the valve lifters away from the camshaft. See Illustration 1.

- Carefully remove camshaft (2) from the engine.
