Cylinder Head - Remove

Start By:

  1. Remove the fan drive mounting group. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fan Drive Mounting Group - Remove and Install".

  2. Remove the valve mechanism cover base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover Base - Remove and Install".

  3. Remove the turbochargers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger - Remove".

  4. Remove the electronic unit injectors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electronic Unit Injector - Remove".

  5. Remove the precooler. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Precooler - Remove".


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove air tube assembly (1). Disconnect hose assembly (2). Cut all cable straps that connect harness assembly (3) to the cylinder head. Move harness assembly aside.

  2. Disconnect hose assemblies (5) and (6). Disconnect clamp (4) from the cylinder head. Remove bolts (7).

  3. Disconnect the following items: clip (8), wire assembly (10) and harness assembly from sensor (12). Disconnect hose assembly (9) from the cylinder head. Remove bolt (11).

  4. Disconnect harness assembly (14).

  5. Remove cylinder head bolts (19).

  6. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the cylinder head. Carefully remove the cylinder head from the cylinder block. The weight of the cylinder head is approximately 184 kg (405 lb).
