Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil. Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system. Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

- Move the machine to a flat, hard surface. Remove the hydraulic tank cover in order to relieve any pressure that is remaining in the steering system.
- Remove the secondary steering pump from the transfer gears.
ReferenceRefer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Secondary Steering Pump - Remove" for more information on removing the secondary steering pump.
- Install the secondary steering pump on a hydraulic test bench. Test the margin pressure and the cutoff pressure.
- The margin pressure should be 345 ± 120 kPa (50 ± 17 psi).
- If the pressure reading is incorrect, loosen locknut (1) on adjustment screw (3). Turn the adjustment screw clockwise in order to increase the setting. Turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise in order to decrease the setting.
- When you tighten locknut (1) hold adjustment screw (3) secure. Repeat Step 5 until you obtain the correct pressure setting in Step 4.
- After the correct pressure is obtained, tighten locknut (1) to 7 ± 1 N·m (60 ± 9 lb in).
- The cutoff pressure should be 15500 ± 350 kPa (2250 ± 51 psi).
- If the pressure reading is incorrect, loosen locknut (1) on adjustment screw (2). Turn the adjustment screw clockwise in order to increase the setting. Turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise in order to decrease the setting.
- When you tighten locknut (1) hold adjustment screw (2) secure. Repeat Step 9 until you obtain the correct pressure setting in Step 8.
- After the correct pressure is obtained, tighten locknut (1) to 7 ± 1 N·m (60 ± 9 lb in).
- Install the secondary steering pump.
ReferenceRefer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Secondary Steering Pump - Install" for more information on installing the secondary steering pump.
- Check the oil level in the hydraulic oil tank. If the oil level is low, add hydraulic oil until the level is correct.
- Purge the steering system.
ReferenceRefer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Steering System - Purge" for more information on purging the steering system.
