    ------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure.

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.

Before installation or removal of any hydraulic test equipment, relieve the pressure in the hydraulic tank by slowly loosening the filler cap.

    ----------------------

  1. Move the machine to a flat, hard surface. Remove the hydraulic tank cover in order to relieve any pressure that remains in the steering system.

    NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove plug (1) from field test port (2) on steering control valve (3). Install Tool (A) to fitting.

  1. Start the engine and operate the engine at high idle. Raise the bowl and release the brakes.

    (7) Right turn stops

  1. Turn the machine toward the right until right turn stops (7) hit. Continue steering to the right. The digital pressure indicator on field test port (2) should be 18650 kPa (2700 psi) to 19350 kPa (2800 psi). The pressure should not exceed 20000 kPa (2900 psi).

Note: The pressure should not vary more than 690 kPa (100 psi) from the right to the left.

    Illustration 4g01623472

    (6) Left turn stops

  1. Turn the machine toward the left until left turn stops (6) hit.

  1. If the pressure reading is out of tolerance, stop the machine and shut off the engine. Engage the parking brake. Loosen nut (4) and turn retainer assembly (5) in order to adjust the pressure. One-half turn of retainer assembly (5) will adjust the setting of the relief valve 1585 kPa (230 psi). Turn retainer assembly (5) clockwise in order to increase the pressure. Turn retainer assembly (5) counterclockwise in order to decrease the pressure.

  1. Repeat Step 5 through Step 6 until the pressure is correct.

  1. Remove Tool (A) from field test port (2). Install plug (1) to field test port (2) on steering control valve (3) .

  1. Check the oil level in the hydraulic oil tank. If the oil level is low, add hydraulic oil until the level is correct.

  1. Purge the steering system.

ReferenceRefer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Steering System - Purge" for more information on purging the steering system.
