Data Connections
Data Link Communication
The data link is available to share data between the ECM, electronic display modules, electronic service tools, and other modules.
SAE J1939 Data Link
The SAE J1939 data link is used to communicate engine information from the ECM to the displays on the J1939 data link.
SAE J1587 and SAE J1708 ATA Data Link
The electronic control system has a standard data link that is available. The ATA SAE J1587 and SAE J1708 Data Link (American Trucking Association) is standard. The SAE J1587 ATA Data Link is used in some applications to communicate with electronic service tools that are available at Caterpillar. Use 143-5018 Data Link Cable for all connections to the ATA Data Link.
CAT Data Link
The CAT Data Link is a proprietary communication medium that is available on all electronic engines that are produced by Caterpillar. The CAT Data Link is used for communications between the engine and other electronic display modules that are created by Caterpillar that are microprocessor based.
The CAT Data Link (CDL) must be wired properly for proper display operation. Use the 143-5018 Data Link Cable and the terminal strips that are dedicated for all connections to the CDL. Locate the terminal strips in order to minimize the overall cable length for the CDL. The total length of the data link wires should NOT exceed 30 m (100 ft).
There should be only one cable for the CDL that runs to the electronic displays. If another operator station uses a CDL, then the data link cable should be run from the terminal strip to the original operator station. The cable should then run from the first station to the second station.
Improper wiring of the CAT Data Link can result in electronic display modules that do not function properly.
