The Black Start Push Button is used to start the engine.

When the ECS is in the Black Start position, the engine will not start until the push button is depressed. The engine will stop if the snorkel shutdown device changes states. The engine will stop if the ECS is turned to the STOP position or to the OFF position. |

Test Step 1. Check for Connector Damage
- Turn the Engine Control Switch (ECS) to the OFF/RESET position.
- Check the connectors and wiring for the following problems: damage, corrosion, abrasion and incorrect attachment.
Expected Result:
The connectors and wiring should be free of the following problems: damage, corrosion, abrasion and incorrect attachment.
Results:
- OK - There are no problems with the wiring. Proceed to test step 2.
- Not OK - There are problems with the wiring.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
Test Step 2. Check the Switch Status on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET).
- Install the Cat ET to the service tool connector.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position. The engine should be OFF.
- Disable the Air Start.

- Operate the Black Start Push Button. Observe the status on the Cat ET.
Expected Result:
The status should change when the position is changed.
Results:
- OK - The button is operating normally. Proceed to test step 3.
- Not OK - No change is observed on the Cat ET when the Black Start Push Button is operated. Proceed to test step 4.
Test Step 3. Check the Switch Status on the Cat ET.
- Install the Cat ET.
- Observe the status for the Black Start Push Button.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position. The engine should be OFF.
- Turn the ECS to the STOP position.
Expected Result:
The status of the switch should change from "ON" to "OFF".
Results:
- OK - The status of the switch changes from "ON" to "OFF".
Repair: If you are troubleshooting an intermittent fault, perform the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors".
Stop.
- Not OK - The status of the switch did not change from "ON" to "OFF". Proceed to test step 5.
Test Step 4. Bypass the Wiring Harness.
- Construct a jumper wire that can reach from the suspect Electronic Control Module (ECM) to the Black Start Push Button.
- Connect one end of the jumper wire at P1-25.
- Connect the other end to the switch at pin 7.
- Disable the Air Start.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position.
- Change the switch position. Monitor the status on the Cat ET.
Expected Result:
The status should change.
Results:
- OK - The status on the Cat ET changed. There is a problem in the wiring harness.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
- Not OK - The status on the Cat ET did not change. There is a problem in the harness and/or the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Proceed to test step 12.
Test Step 5. Check the Lamp Status on the Cat ET
- Construct a jumper wire that can reach from the ECM to the lamp on the Black Start Push Button.
- Connect one end of the jumper wire to P1-21.
- Connect the other end of the jumper wire to pin C on the Black Start Push Button.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position.
- Monitor the status and check the lamp.
Expected Result:
The status should change and the lamp should illuminate.
Results:
- OK - The status changed. The lamp illuminated.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
- Not OK - The status did not change. The lamp did not illuminate. Proceed to test step 6.
Test Step 6. Check the Harness.
- Construct a jumper wire that can reach from the + battery terminal to pin 1 on the Black Start Push Button.
- Disable the air start.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position.
- Monitor the status and check the lamp.
Expected Result:
The status should change and the lamp should illuminate.
Results:
- OK - The status changed. The lamp illuminated.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
- Not OK - The status did not change. The lamp did not illuminate. Proceed to test step 7.
Test Step 7. Check the Harness.
- Construct a jumper wire that can reach from the + battery terminal to pin 2 on the Black Start Push Button.
- Disable the air start.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position.
- Monitor the status and check the lamp.
Expected Result:
The status should change and the lamp should illuminate.
Results:
- OK - The status changed. The lamp illuminated.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
- Not OK - The status did not change. The lamp did not illuminate. Proceed to test step 8.
Test Step 8. Check the Harness.
- Construct a jumper wire that can reach from the + battery terminal to pin 3 on the black start push button.
- Disable the air start.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position.
- Monitor the status and check the lamp.
Expected Result:
The status should change and the lamp should illuminate.
Results:
- OK - The status changed. The lamp illuminated.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
- Not OK - The status did not change. The lamp did not illuminate. Proceed to test step 9.
Test Step 9. Check the Harness.
- Construct a jumper wire that can reach from the + battery terminal to pin 4 on the Black Start Push Button.
- Disable the air start.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position.
- Monitor the status and check the lamp.
Expected Result:
The status should change and the lamp should illuminate.
Results:
- OK - The status changed. The lamp illuminated.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
- Not OK - The status did not change. The lamp did not illuminate. Proceed to test step 10.
Test Step 10. Bypass the Wiring Harness
- Disable the air start.
- Construct a jumper wire from the ECM to the switch.
- Install the wire at P1-29.
- Connect the other end to pin 5 on the switch.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position.
- Change the switch position. Monitor the status on the Cat ET.
Expected Result:
The status of the switch should change.
Results:
- OK - The status of the switch changed.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
- Not OK - There is a short in the harness between the switch and the ECM. Proceed to test step 11.
Test Step 11. Check the Switch.
- Construct a jumper wire from pin 5 to pin 7 at the switch.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position.
- Change the switch position. Monitor the status on the Cat ET.
Expected Result:
The status of the switch should change.
Results:
- OK - The status of the switch changed.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
- Not OK - There is a short in the harness between the switch and the ECM. Proceed to test step 13.
Test Step 12. Check the ECM.
- Turn the ECS to the OFF/RESET position.
- Use a suitable piece of wire to short the pins at the ECM. Connect P1-29 to P1-25.
- Disable the air start.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position. The engine should be OFF.
- Monitor the status of the switch on the Cat ET.
Expected Result:
The status of the switch should change with the wire in place.
Results:
- OK - The status of the switch changes with the wire in place.
Repair: Temporarily connect a new push button. Verify that the new push button solves the problem before you permanently install the new push button.
Stop.
- Not OK - There is a short in the harness between the switch and the ECM. Proceed to test step 13.
Test Step 13. Check the Harness.
- Turn the ECS to the OFF/RESET position.
- Construct a jumper wire that will reach from the suspect ECM to the push button. The Primary ECM connections should be P1-25 to pin 7 at the push button. The Primary ECM connections should be from P1-29 to the return side of the push button.
- Disable the air start.
- Turn the ECS to the BLACK START ENABLE position. The engine should be OFF.
- Depress the button.
- Monitor the status on the Cat ET.
Expected Result:
The status should change.
Results:
- OK - The status on the Cat ET changed when the button was depressed.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring.
Stop.
- Not OK - The status on the Cat ET did not change when the button was depressed. Proceed to test step 14.
Test Step 14. Check the Voltage.
- Place the switch in the Low Idle position.
- Measure the voltage at the Primary ECM between J1-25 and J1-5.
Expected Result:
The voltage should be less than 0.9 VDC.
Results:
- OK - The voltage is less than 0.9 VDC.
Repair: Replace the switch.
Stop.
- Not OK - The voltage is greater than 0.9 VDC.
Repair: Replace the ECM. Perform the diagnostic procedure Troubleshooting, "Replacing the ECM".
Stop.
