除了良好的預防保養計畫外，Caterpillar 建議定期使用 S·O·S (Scheduled Oil Sampling, 定期機油取樣) 機油分析，以便監控引擎狀況和引擎的保養要求。
每項機油樣本都應該在機油溫熱，而且混合良好的時候採取。 在此時採樣是為了確保樣本足以代表曲軸箱內的機油。
Caterpillar 建議使用取樣閥來採集油樣。 若使用取樣閥，樣本的品質和稠度會更好。
為避免污染機油油樣，用於取樣的工具和用品必須清潔乾淨。
