Usage:
3204 (45V, 10X) Engines In Caterpillar Machines
If a cylinder head gasket fails on a 3204 Machine Engine, replace the head gasket with the latest 7W2059 Cylinder Head Gasket. Although the part number of this gasket has not changed, the bead material around the water passages has been changed. Formerly, the bead material around the water passages was yellow. Currently, the bead material is a red-orange color. Only use the 7W2059 Cylinder Head Gasket with the red-orange color bead material for repairs. The 7W2059 Cylinder Head Gasket with the red-orange color bead material was in effect with 3204 Machine Engine 45V99221. Use the procedure that follows when replacing a cylinder head gasket. Make note of this procedure in the appropriate Service Manual Specifications and Disassembly and Assembly modules.
Procedure To Replace Cylinder Head Gasket
1. Thoroughly clean all surfaces that contact the cylinder head gasket.
2. Clean all cylinder head bolt holes in the block. Run a tap down each hole to make sure the threads are clean and properly tapped. The thread in the small holes is 3/8inch - 16, and the thread in the larger holes is 1/2inch - 13.
3. (Effective with 3204 Machine Engine 45V90764, this Step is not required.) Check the depth of each cylinder head bolt hole in the block. The minimum threaded depth of the 3/8 inch bolt holes is 17.0 mm (.67 in). The minimum threaded depth of the 1/2 inch bolt holes is 30.5 mm (1.20 in). If the holes are not deep enough, tap threads to the minimum specified depth.
4. Install a new 7W2059 Cylinder Head Gasket (with the red-orange color bead material around the water passages).
5. Install the cylinder head.
6. Lightly coat the cylinder head bolt threads and washer faces with 6V4876 Molykote Paste Lubricant prior to assembly. Install the cylinder head bolts in their correct locations. See Illustrations 1 and 2. Tighten the cylinder head bolts as follows:
Illustration 1. Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence.
Illustration 2. Head bolt location chart.
a. Tighten bolts 1 through 18 in the number sequence shown to a torque of 149 ± 13 N·m (110 ± 10 lb ft).
b. Loosen bolts 1 through 18 so the washers are free to rotate on the bolts.
c. Tighten bolts 1 through 18 in the number sequence to a torque of 81 ± 13 N·m (60 ± 10 lb ft).
d. Tighten bolts 1 through 18 in the number sequence to a torque of 148 ± 6.5 N·m (110 ± 5 lb ft).
e. Tighten bolts 1 through 10 in the number sequence to a torque of 163 ± 6.5 N·m (121 ± 5 lb ft).
f. Tighten bolts 19 through 22 in the number sequence to a torque of 43 ± 6.5 N·m (32 ± 5 lb ft).
