Some 4L8546 Check Valves may not function correctly. The valve may allow the fuel to slowly leak past the ball and seat, in the check valve. Before replacing the 4L8546 Check Valve, use the procedure that follows to "peen" the check valve ball to the check valve seat.
Location of components of the 4L8546 Check Valve. O-ring Seal (1). Plug (2). Ball Bearing (3). Seat (4). Plunger (5). Spring (6).
1. Remove the plug (2) from the check valve body. See the illustration.
2. Remove the spring (6) and plunger (5) from the check valve.
3. Place the pipe threaded end of the check valve down on a wood board on a solid bench. The wood board will help prevent damage to the pipe threads.
4. Be sure the ball bearing (3) is in place on the valve seat (4). Place a brass or aluminum punch or bar on top of the ball bearing. Strike the punch with a hammer to "peen" the valve seat. One solid hit with the hammer should be sufficient.
5. Remove the punch or bar. Install the spring (6) and plunger (5) in the check valve.
6. Check the O-ring (1) on the plug (2). Install the plug.
