Start By:

  1. Remove the gear pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Gear Pump (Hoist) - Remove" for the correct procedure.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Before disassembly, thoroughly clean the outside of the gear pump.

  2. Position the pump in a soft jawed vise. Remove eight nuts (3). Remove any burrs or sharp edges from drive gear shaft (1). Put a thin layer of grease on drive gear shaft (1). Keep flange assembly (2) as straight as possible. Lift flange assembly (2) off pump body (4).

  3. Check two shaft bushings (5) in flange assembly (2) for wear or damage. If necessary, remove shaft bushings (5).

  4. Use Tool (A) to remove two lip seals (6) from flange assembly (2). Use Tool (B) to remove retaining ring (8) from flange assembly (2). Use Tool (A) to remove lip seal (7) from flange assembly (2).

  5. Remove O-ring seal (9) and pressure plate (11) from pump body (4).

    Note: For installation purposes, mark the position of pressure plate (11). Groove (10) on pressure plate (11) must be facing toward the outlet side of pump body (4).

  6. Remove seal (12) from pressure plate (11).

    Note: For installation purposes, mark the position of seal (12). The grooved side of seal (12) must face the surface of pressure plate (11).

  7. Mark the position of drive gear (1) and idler gear (13) for installation purposes. Remove drive gear (1) and idler gear (13) from pump body (4).

  8. Remove pressure plate (14) from the pump body.

    Note: Mark the position of pressure plate (14) for installation purposes. Groove (16) is located on the bottom of pressure plate (14). Groove (16) must face toward the outlet side of pump body (4).

  9. Remove seal (15) from pressure plate (14).

    Note: Mark the position of seal (15) for installation purposes. The grooved side of seal (15) must face the surface of pressure plate (14).

  10. If necessary, remove the dowels from pump body (4). Remove pump body (4) from the gear pump.

  11. Inspect shaft bushings (18) and bolt dampers (17) in pump body (4) for wear or damage. If necessary, remove shaft bushings (18) and dampers (17).

  12. Remove eight studs (19) and eight O-ring seals (20) from plate assembly (21).

  13. Remove spline coupling (22) and O-ring seal (23) from plate assembly (21).

  14. Mark plate assembly (21) for installation purposes. Remove plate assembly (21) from pump body (24).

  15. Inspect shaft bushings (25) in plate assembly (21) for wear or damage. If necessary, remove shaft bushings (25).

  16. Remove O-ring seal (27) and pressure plate (26) from pump body (24).

    Note: Mark the position of pressure plate (26) for installation purposes. Groove (28) is located on top of pressure plate (26). Groove (28) must face the outlet side of pump body (24).

  17. Remove seal (29) from pressure plate (26).

    Note: Mark the position of seal (29) for installation purposes. The grooved side of seal (29) faces the surface of pressure plate (26).

  18. Mark the position of drive gear (30) and idler gear (31) for installation purposes. Remove drive gear (30) and idler gear (31) for installation purposes. Remove drive gear (30) and idler gear (31) from pump body (24).

  19. Remove pressure plate (32) from pump body (24).

    Note: Mark the position of pressure plate (32) for the installation purposes. Groove (33) is located on the bottom of pressure plate (32). Groove (33) must face the outlet side of pump body (24).

  20. Remove seal (34) from pressure plate (32).

    Note: Mark the position of seal (34) for installation purposes. The grooved side of seal (34) faces the surface of pressure plate (32).

  21. If necessary, remove the dowel pins from pump body (24). Inspect shaft bushings (35) in pump body (24) for wear or damage. If necessary, remove the shaft bushings.
