Assemble and Install Conventional Duo-Cone Seal Kits
Note: Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS8484, "Tool and Spec Charts for Inverted and Conventional Duo-Cone Seal Kits" for the appropriate installation tool.
This instruction gives the procedure for installing Conventional Duo-Cone Seals.
It is most important to follow the correct procedure to assemble the Duo-Cone Seals. It is equally important to follow the correct procedure to install the seals. Many of the Duo-Cone Seal failures are a direct result of mistakes in the assembly or the installation of the seal components.

- Remove any oil, dust or other foreign material from toric rings (2), ramps (4) and (7) and lips (3) and (8). Use Isopropyl Alcohol and a clean cloth in order to clean all surfaces.
- Put toric ring (2) on seal ring (1), at the bottom of seal ring ramp (7) and against seal ring retaining lip (8) .
NOTICE |
---|
Never allow oil to get on the toric rings or ramps before the seal rings are put together in the final assembled position (Step 9). |
Avoid prolonged skin contact with isopropyl alcohol. Avoid breathing the vapors in enclosed areas without adequate ventilation and do not smoke. Isopropyl alcohol is flammable. Do not use near open flame, welding operations, or around heated surfaces exceeding 482°C (900°F). |

- Put installation tool (9) on seal ring (1) with toric ring (2). Lower the rings into a container of Isopropyl Alcohol until all surfaces of toric ring (2) are wet.
NOTICE |
---|
Make sure that toric ring (2) does not twist. The toric ring must be straight on seal ring (1). Be careful when you work on the rubber toric ring. Nicks, cuts, and scratches can cause leaks. |

- Use installation tool (9) in order to position seal ring (1) and toric ring (2) squarely against seal ring housing (5). Use even pressure in order to push toric ring (2) under housing retaining lip (3) of seal ring housing (5) .

- Check assembled height (A) all the way around the circumference. The difference in height around the ring must not be more than 1.0 mm (0.04 inch).

- Do not push on seal ring (1) directly. If small adjustments are needed, use installation tool (9) .
Note: Toric ring (2) can twist during installation if the ring is not completely wet or if there are burrs on housing retaining lip (3) of seal ring housing (5) .
Note: Toric rings (2) must never slip on the ramps of either seal ring (1) or seal ring housing (5). Once the rings are in place, the rings must only rotate on the ramps.

- Securely fasten the parts, once the parts are in place.
NOTICE |
---|
Do not slam the parts together. A hard impact can damage the seal components. The seal components can be scratched or broken. |
