Start By:

  1. Remove the right side undercarriage. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Undercarriage - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.

  2. Remove the right side covers. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Covers - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

    Note: The axle with the 20 hole pattern is for the tractors with a 2032 mm (80.0 inch) base.

    Note: The axle with the 16 hole pattern is for the tractors with a 1524 mm (60 inch) base which is shown in this story.

  1. Drain approximately 155 L (41.0 US gal) of oil from the center housing in a suitable container.

  2. Disconnect electrical connector (1) from the rear right side of the cab. Disconnect electrical connectors (2) and (3) from the rear left side of the cab.

  3. Loosen nut (4) on right rear cab mounting bolt (5). Repeat on the left side.

  4. Position a pry bar between cab (6) and washer (7). Pry up on cab (6) and place Tooling (A) on center housing (8). Secure Tooling (A) to the frame rail with a nut and a bolt. Install the nut and the bolt through the hole in the frame rail. Remove the pry bar. Remove the following items from right rear cab mount (12): nut (4), washers (9) and (10), lower mount assembly (11), right rear cab mounting bolt (5) and washer (7).

  5. Remove four bolts and washers (13) from right rear cab mount (12). Remove right rear cab mount (12) with upper mount assembly (14) from axle housing (15).

  6. Remove two of sixteen bolts (16) from axle housing (15).

    Note: Leave the upper two bolts in position.

  7. Install Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device on axle housing (15). Position Tooling (B) so that the bolts are set in the inner grooves of axle housing (15). Remove twelve of the remaining fourteen bolts (16) from axle housing (15).

  8. Install Tooling (C) in center housing (8). Place one of Tooling (C ) on each side. Remove two bolts (16) from axle housing (15).

  9. Use Tooling (B) in order to remove the rear axle group with the ring gear from center housing (8). The weight of the rear axle group is 374 kg (825 lb). After the rear axle group is removed, remove Tooling (C) from center housing (8).
