CID 0562 FMI 09 Caterpillar Monitoring System Abnormal Update - Test

Usage:

D350E II 2XW
This diagnostic code is recorded when the power train electronic control module (ECM) cannot communicate with the Caterpillar Monitoring System via the CAT Data Link. The update rate from the ECM is not correct.

The CAT Data Link is an input and an output of all modules. The CAT Data Link is designed to enable communications for all electronic control modules and service tools. The CAT Data Link is not a visible component. The data link consists of internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring.

  1. CHECK THE COMPATIBILITY OF THE SOFTWARE.

    1. Verify that the software is compatible.

Expected Result: The software is compatible.

      Results:

      • OK - The software is compatible. Proceed to 2.

      • NOT OK - The software is NOT compatible. Install the correct software. Ensure that the correct part number was used if any electronic control modules have been replaced. Continue if the conditions are not resolved. STOP.

  1. CHECK THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT.

    1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

    1. Disconnect connector J1 from the power train ECM.

    1. Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

    1. At connector J1, measure the voltage from contact J1-1 and contact J1-6 to contact J1-2 and contact J1-5.

Expected Result: The voltage should measure 18 to 35 DCV.

      Results:

      • OK - The voltage is correct. The ECM is receiving the voltage. Proceed to 3.

      • NOT OK - The voltage does NOT measure 18 to 35 DCV. The ECM is NOT receiving the correct voltage. Ensure that proper ground is available. If the ground is correct, repair the power circuit. Also, check the circuit breakers. The circuit for connector contact J1-1 or J1-6 to the ECM is faulty. Repair the failed circuit. If conditions are not resolved proceed to 3.

  1. CHECK THE DATA LINK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND.

    1. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

    1. Inspect the machine harness connectors that are related to the circuits of the CAT Data Link. Ensure that the connector contacts are clean and tight.

    1. Disconnect the machine harness from all modules.

    1. At the machine harness connector for the ECM, measure the resistance from contact J1-3 (wire 892-BR) and contact J1-9 (wire 893-GN) to all possible sources of ground. The possible sources of ground are connector contacts: J1-2 (wire 202-BK), J1-5 (wire 202-BK), J1-7 (wire F789-PU), J2-3 (wire F790-PK) and frame ground.

Expected Result: The resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement.

      Results:

      • OK - The resistance measurement is correct. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to 4.

      • NOT OK - The resistance measurement is not correct. There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between contact J1-3 (wire 892-BR) or contact J1-9 (wire 893-GN) and the circuit with the low resistance measurement. Repair the harness or replace the harness. If conditions are not resolved, replace the ECM. See Testing And Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". If the problem remains present, exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. STOP.

  1. CHECK THE CAT DATA LINK FOR A SHORT TO POSITIVE VOLTAGE.

    1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

    1. All modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

    1. At the machine harness connector for the ECM, measure the resistance from contact J1-3 and contact J1-9 to all possible sources of positive voltage. The possible sources of positive voltage are connector contacts: J1-1 (wire 126-PK), J1-4 (wire A958-WH), J1-6 (wire 126-PK), J1-8 (wire 306-GN), J1-10 (wire 728-BU), J1-11 (wire 705-PK), J1-12 (703-BU), J1-17 (wire 904-BU), J1-18 (wire 704-GY), J2-1 (wire K746-PK), J2-2 (wire 368-OR), J2-7 (wire G870-GY), J2-8 (wire K745-YL), J2-13 (wire G705-GN), J2-19 (wire G704-YL) and J2-37 (wire 321-BR).

Expected Result: The resistance measurement should be greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement.

      Results:

      • OK - The resistance is correct. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to 5.

      • NOT OK - The resistance is not correct. There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between contact J1-3 or contact J1-9 and the circuit with the low resistance measurement. Repair the harness or replace the harness. If conditions are not resolved replace the ECM. See Testing And Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". STOP.

  1. CHECK THE CAT DATA LINK FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT.

    1. The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.

    1. All related electronic control modules remain disconnected from the machine harness.

    1. At the ECM, measure the resistance from contact J1-3 (wire 892-BR) to the corresponding contact J1-14 (wire 892-BR) of the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

    1. At the ECM, measure the resistance from connector contact J1-9 (wire 893-GN) to the corresponding connector contact J1-5 (wire 893-GN) of the Caterpillar Monitoring System.

Expected Result: There should be less than 5 ohms resistance for each measurement.

      Results:

      • OK - The CAT Data Link circuit in the machine harness is correct. It is unlikely that the ECM is faulty. Exit this procedure and perform this CID 0562 FMI 09 again. If the cause of the problem is not found, replace the ECM. See Testing And Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". STOP.

      • NOT OK - There is an open in the harness. The open is in wire (892-BR) or wire (893-GN) of the CAT Data Link. Repair the harness or replace the harness. STOP.
