Start By:

  1. Remove the cab. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cab - Removal".

  2. Separate of main frame and engine frame. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Main Frame and Engine Frame - Separate".

Note: The transmission and the extension housing should be removed as a unit. Removing the transmission and the extension housing as a unit will prevent damage to the power take-off shaft (PTO).

Note: Put identification on all lines, hoses and tubes for installation purposes. Cap all lines, hoses and tubes in order to prevent foreign material from entering the system.

    NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  23. Before you separate the transmission and the extension housing from the center housing, you need to hold the pump drive gear (43) and the two couplings (44) through the access cover. The pump drive gear (43) and the two couplings (44) stay in the extension housing during removal. If you fail to do this, pump drive gear (43) and the two couplings (44) will fall when you do the separation. Remove bolts (46) from the center housing.

  24. Separate transmission (36) and extension housing (35) from center housing (2). The weight of transmission (36) and extension housing (35) is 1180 kg (2600 lb).
