SUBJECT: Failures of 161-1343 Transmission Control on Motor Graders
PROBLEM:
Nearly 80% of the 161-1343 Transmission Controls that Caterpillar Electronics Customer Service recovers from warranty claims pass all functional tests. Claim reports state that these transmission controls failed because of the following reasons:
- "668 F02" faults logged
- "668 F03" faults logged
- Failure-to-Select-Gears fault logged
SOLUTION:
A
"668 F02" fault can be logged by the transmission control when the transmission control registers more than one gear. This fault can be created at any time by holding the shifter lever between two gears. For example, if a shifter lever is held between second gear and third gear, a "668 F02" fault will be logged. If a "668 F02" fault is logged but the machine appears to be operating correctly, do not replace the 161-1343 Transmission Control. If a "668 F02" fault is logged, clear the fault. Ensure that the machine operator is informed that the transmission control has the potential to log "668 F02" faults if the shifter is not in a detented position. If the problem still exists, call Caterpillar Customer Service at (309) 578-6529.A
"668 F03" fault can be logged by the transmission control when the shifter contacts become corroded due to lack of use. A "668 F03" fault can also be logged by the transmission control when the connector contacts become corroded. Before replacing the 161-1343 Transmission Control, inspect and clean all connections. In addition, while the machine is OFF and the blade is grounded, move the shifter through all positions several times in order to remove any contact corrosion caused by lack of use. If the problem still exists, call Caterpillar Customer Service at (309) 578-6529.A Failure-to-Select-Gears failure can be related to
"668 F02" faults or "668 F03" faults. If a machine fails to enter a selected gear, apply the same corrective actions as listed above for a "668 F02" fault or a "668 F03" fault. Before replacing any 161-1343 Transmission Controls, call Caterpillar Customer Service at (309) 578-6529. Caterpillar Customer Service will help troubleshoot the problem.
