Remanufactured 3500 Engine Core Return Requirements{1000}

Usage:

Reference: Remanufactured 3500 Engines - Core Acceptance Criteria, SELD0164-02 .

Recently Caterpillar has received a number of 3500 engine cores that were improperly prepared for shipment. In some cases engine oil and coolant had not been drained. In other cases openings were not covered. This allowed water contamination that resulted in significant internal rust. Currently, we are not charging dealers an "add charge" for these problems even though some of these cores have excessive damage.

The Reference documents the Core Acceptance Criteria. As a reminder, here are some of the highlights.

* Use caps, plugs, and covers that come on the remanufactured engine to close all openings of the core. These openings include:

Turbocharger intake and exhaust

Flywheel

Oil fill tube

Oil cooler inlet/outlet

Water pump inlet

Oil pan drain openings

Oil filter opening

Dip stick (if removed)

Fuel filters (use old filters)

* If the covers from the remanufactured engine are not available, use puncture resistant tape. Please do not stuff rags in the openings because the rags do not keep the moisture out. Seal the openings with tape instead.

* In addition to covering the openings, drain all coolant from the engine block, oil cooler, and water pump. Drain all oil from the engine block.

* Since these cores are often subjected to extended periods outdoors, please shrink wrap the engine after all the openings are covered and the engine has been mounted to the reusable metal shipping stand.
