Usage:
Remove Rear Wheel Bearings And Duo-Cone Seals
start by:
a) remove rear wheels
b) remove final drive ring gear
1. Put tooling (A) in position under the wheel as shown. Remove the wire (1) from the bolts that hold the final drive hub on the wheel spindle.
2. Install tooling (B) on final drive hub (4). Remove eight bolts (2) and retainer (3). Remove the hub from the wheel. The weight of the hub is 80 lb. (36 kg).
3. Use a lift truck as a support for the wheel assembly as shown. Remove wheel bearing outer cone (5) from the axle housing (6).
4. Remove wheel assembly (7). The weight of the wheel assembly is 800 lb. (365 kg).
5. Remove wheel bearing inner cone (8) from the axle housing. Remove retainer (9) from the axle housing.
6. Remove Duo-Cone seal (10) from retainer (9). Remove O-ring seal (11) from the retainer.
7. Remove Duo-Cone seal (12) from the wheel.
8. Remove inner bearing cup (13) from the wheel.
9. Remove outer bearing cup (14) from the wheel.
10. Remove Duo-Cone seals (15) and (16) from the brake assembly.
Install Rear Wheel Bearings And Duo-Cone Seals
NOTE: Make sure all surfaces of the Duo-Cone seal are clean and dry. Put a thin layer of clean oil on the metal contact surfaces of the Duo-Cone seal at assembly.
1. Use tool (A) to install the smaller Duo-Cone seal on the brake assembly.
2. Use tool (B) to install the larger Duo-Cone seal on the brake assembly.
3. Install O-ring seal (1) on retainer (2). Use tool (A) to install the Duo-Cone seal on the retainer.
4. Install retainer assembly (2) and bearing cone (4) on axle housing (3).
5. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (5) and (6). Install the bearing cups in the wheel until the bearing cups are against the shoulders in the wheel.
6. Use tool (B) to install the Duo-Cone seal on the wheel.
7. Use a lift truck to put the wheel assembly in position on the axle housing. Install wheel bearing outer cone (7). The weight of the wheel is 800 lb. (365 kg).
8. Install tooling (D) as a support for the wheel assembly. Use tool (C) to put hub (8) in position on the axle housing.
9. Make a measurement for the wheel bearing pre-load adjustment as follows:
a) Make a measurement of the thickness of retainers (9).
b) Install retainer (9) on the axle housing with three bolts (10) that have spaces between them as even as possible as shown. Tighten the bolts evenly to a torque of 50 lb. ft. (70 N·m). Turn the wheel and tighten the bolts again to a torque of 50 lb. ft. (70 N·m).
c) Use a depth micrometer as shown to measure the distance from the outside of retainer (9) to the end of the axle housing.
d) Find the difference between the measurements in Step a and Step c. This difference is the distance between the end of the axle housing and the inside surface of the retainer.
e) The thickness of shims (11) must be .004 in. (0.10 mm) thicker than the distance found in Step d.
10. Remove the bolts and retainer (9). Install the correct thickness of shims (11) and the retainer with eight bolts.

The lockwire must not go over the heads of bolts (10). |
11. Install lockwire (12) through the heads of bolts (10).
end by:
a) install final drive ring gear.
b) install rear wheels
