Hydraulic Shift Cylinder And Solenoids

Usage:

Remove Hydraulic Shift Cylinder And Solenoids

1. Lift the body of the truck and put FT1437 Body Support in position. See INSTALL AND REMOVE BODY SUPPORT on Page 7.

2. Remove three bolts (1) and guard (2) from the transmission cover.

3. Put identification on two wires (5) for correct assembly. Remove lockwire and disconnect the wires from solenoids (3) and (4).

4. Disconnect tube (6) from the shift cylinder.

5. Remove four bolts (7) and cover (8) from the transmission cover.

6. Remove four bolts (10) that fasten shift cylinder (9) to the transmission cover.

7. Remove the shift cylinder from the transmission cover. Be sure link (12) is not over lever (11). Remove two O-ring seals (13) from the shift cylinder.

Install Hydraulic Shift Cylinder And Solenoids

1. Inspect the condition of O-ring seals (1) and make replacements if necessary. Put shift cylinder and solenoids (2) in position on the transmission cover.

2. Be sure link (4) on the shift valve spool is over lever (3). Install four bolts (5) and lockwashers that fasten the shift cylinder and solenoids to the transmission cover.

3. Install gasket (6) and cover (7) on the transmission cover with four bolts and lockwashers.

4. Connect tube (11) to the shift cylinder. Connect two wires (9) to solenoids (8) and (10). Install lockwire to keep the wire connectors tight.

5. Install guard (12) on the transmission cover with three bolts and lockwashers.

Disassemble Hydraulic Shift Cylinder And Solenoids

start by:

remove hydraulic shift cylinder and solenoids

1. Make a note of position of both tubes for assembly purposes. Loosen two nuts (1) on each tube (2) and remove the tubes from solenoid valves (3).

2. Make a note of the position of both solenoid valves for assembly purposes. Remove the four bolts and lockwashers that hold each solenoid valve in place on the shift cylinder body assembly.

3. Remove both solenoid valves from the body assembly.

4. Disassemble the solenoid valve as follows:

a) Remove adapter (4) from the sleeve assembly.

b) Remove O-ring seal (6) from the adapter.

c) Remove nut (9), lockwasher (5) and solenoid (8) from sleeve assembly (7).

d) Remove sleeve (12) from body (10) with tool (A).

e) Remove spring (14), plunger (11) and seal (13) from the body.

5. Do Steps 4 a) through 4 e) for the other solenoid valve.

6. Remove the bolts that hold cover assembly (17) in position. Remove the cover assembly from shift cylinder body assembly (16).

7. Remove three O-ring seals (19) from the cover assembly.

8. Loosen nut (15) from valve spool (18). Remove link (21) and the nut from the valve spool.

NOTE: Count the number of turns it takes to remove the link from the valve spool so the link can be installed in its original position.

9. Remove the valve spool from the body assembly.

10. Remove retainer ball (20) from the body assembly and retainer (22).

11. Remove the retainer from the body assembly.

NOTE: Make a note of the groove in the body assembly and the hole in the retainer. The groove and the hole must be in alignment when the retainer is installed in the body assembly. This permits the retainer ball to fall into its correct position in the groove of the body assembly.

Assemble Hydraulic Shift Cylinder And Solenoids

NOTE: Clean all parts with a cloth that is free of loose material (lint) and put a thin layer of transmission oil on each of these parts.

1. Put the hole in retainer (1) in alignment with the groove in the shift cylinder body assembly.

2. Install retainer ball (2) in the retainer and push the retainer into the body assembly until the ball falls into the groove in the body assembly.

3. Install valve spool (4) into the body assembly as shown. Make sure the retainer ball does not fall out of the retainer while the valve spool is installed.

4. Install link (3) and the nut into the valve spool. Turn the link into its original position and tighten the nut.

5. Install three O-ring seals (6) on cover assembly (5).

6. Install the cover assembly on the body assembly and install the bolts that hold it in position.

7. Assemble the solenoid valves as follows:

a) Install seal (10), plunger (8), spring (9) and sleeve (7) in body (11).

b) Tighten the sleeve with tool (A).

c) Install solenoid (12) on sleeve assembly (13) as shown.

d) Install the lockwasher and nut on the sleeve assembly.

e) Install the O-ring seal in the adapter and install the adapter on the sleeve assembly.

NOTE: Do not tighten the nut and adapter at this time. Do Steps 7 a) through 7e) again for the other solenoid valve.

8. Install two new O-ring seals (18) on the solenoid valve as shown.

9. Install the solenoid valves on the body assembly. Make sure dowels (14) are in alignment with holes (15) in the solenoid valve. Also, the two vertical holes in the body assembly must be in alignment with the two holes with O-ring seals in the valve as shown.

10. Install the bolts that hold the valves in position.

11. Receptacle (17) of upshift solenoid valve (19) must be in a vertical position as shown.

12. The receptacle of downshift solenoid valve (16) must be 20° ± 5° left of vertical position as shown.

13. Tighten the nut and adapter on each solenoid valve.

14. Install the tubes on the valves and the body assembly and tighten the nuts that hold them in position.
