Usage:
Remove And Install Power Take-Off Drive Group
start by:
a) remove rear drive shaft
NOTE: This operation can be done in the chassis. The transmission was removed for illustration purposes only.
1. Lift the body of the truck and put FT1437 Body Support in position. See INSTALL AND REMOVE BODY SUPPORT on Page 7.
2. Remove two bolts (2) and lockwashers that fasten the power take-off drive group to the transmission case and install two 1/2"-13 NC guide pins (1) as shown.
3. Remove the remainder of the bolts (2). Use two 3/8"- 16 NC forcing screws (4) to make a separation of power take-off drive group (3) and transmission. Install tool (A) as shown and fasten a hoist.
4. Remove the power take-off drive group from the transmission. The weight of the power take-off drive group is 105 lb. (47.3 kg).
5. Inspect the condition of the O-ring seal between the power take-off drive group and the transmission and make a replacement if necessary.
6. Install two 1/2"-13 NC guide pins in the transmission. Install tool (A) on the power take-off drive group and install a hoist. Put the power take-off drive group in position on the transmission case.
7. Remove tool (A). Install the bolts (2) and lockwashers that fasten the power take-off group to the transmission.
end by:
a) install rear drive shaft
Disassemble Power Take-Off Drive Group
start by:
a) remove power take-off drive group
1. Remove bolts (1) and retainer (2) from the yoke.
2. Use a press and tool (A) to push the yoke from the bearings. Remove the bearing cone (3) and spacer from the cage assembly.
3. Remove bolts (4) and lockwashers that fasten retainer (5) to cage (6). Use three 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws to make a separation of the retainer and cage. Remove bearing cone (7) from the bearing cup.
4. Remove O-ring seal (9) and lip type seal (8) from retainer (5).
5. Use tooling (B) as shown to remove two bearing cups (10) and the spacer from the cage.
Assemble Power Take-Off Drive Group
1. Lower the temperature of two bearing cups (1). Install the cup, spacer and cup in cage (2) as shown.
2. Put a thin layer of 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material in the seal bore of retainer (3) and let it become dry. Use tool (A) and a press to install the lip type seal in the retainer. Install the seal with the seal lip toward the inside of the retainer. Put a thin layer of SAE 30 oil on the seal lip.
NOTE: Do not install O-ring seal between the cage and retainer.
3. Put retainer (3) in position on cage (2). Measure the clearance between the retainer and cage as shown. The clearance must be .012 ± .008 in. (0.30 ± 0.20 mm).
4. Install bearing cone (4) in the cage. Install two 3/8"-16 NC guide pins in the cage as shown. Install the O-ring seal on the retainer and put the retainer on the cage. Install the bolts and lockwashers that fasten the retainer to the cage. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 40 ± 5 lb.ft. (54 ± 7 N·m).
5. Lower the temperature of yoke (5). Install tooling (B) on the cage and fasten hoist as shown. Install the cage assembly on the yoke.
6. Install spacer (7) and bearing cone (6) in the cage.
7. Put retainer (9) in position on the yoke. Install three bolts (8) the same distance apart that fasten the retainer to the yoke. Tighten the bolts hand tight only. Measure the clearance between the retainer and the yoke. Remove the bolts and retainer from the yoke.
8. Install shims (1) with a thickness of .001 to .003 in. (0.03 to 0.08 mm) less than the clearance measured in Step 7. Install retainer (9) and the bolts that fasten the retainer to yoke (5). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 40 ± 5 lb.ft. (54 ± 7 N·m).
9. Install O-ring seal (11) on the cage.
