Adjustment Of The Rear Wheel Bearings

Usage:

Adjustment On The Machine

1. Put the retainer, wheel and bearings in position on the axle housing.

2. Install the hub and ring gear.

3. Install retainer (1) without shims (7). Use three bolts evenly spaced. Tighten the bolts evenly to ... 50 lb. ft.(70 N·m)

4. Turn the wheel and again tighten the bolts evenly to ... 50 lb. ft.(70 N·m)

5. Use depth micrometer (2) to measure through the holes, with threads, in the retainer and find the average depth.

6. Use outside micrometer (3) to measure the thickness of the retainer at the holes with threads and find the average thickness.

7. Find the difference between the two average measurements. This difference is the gap between the end of the axle housing and the retainer.

8. Remove retainer (1). Install enough shims (7), between the axle housing and the retainer, so they are .004 in. (0.10 mm) more than the difference of the average measurements.

9. Install retainer (1). Turn the wheel and tighten the bolts that hold retainer to the axle housing.

NOTE: Do not let lockwire go over heads of the bolts that hold retainer (1) to the axle housing.

NOTE: If micrometers are not available, use the procedure that follows:

1. Put the retainer, wheel and bearings in position on the axle housing.

2. Install the hub and ring gear.

3. Install retainer (1) without shims (7). Use three bolts evenly spaced. Tighten the bolts evenly to ... 50 lb. ft.(70 N·m)

4. As the wheel is turned, again tighten the bolts evenly to ... 50 lb. ft.(70 N·m)

5. Install two 1/2" -13 screws (4), with locknuts, into the holes with threads in retainer (1). Tighten screws (4) by hand until they are against the end of the axle housing. Tighten the locknuts against the retainer.

6. Remove retainer (1). With a straight edge (5) across the screws, measure distance (A) from the inner face of retainer (1) to the ends of screws (4) with feeler gauge (6).

7. Install enough shims (7), between the axle housing and retainer, so they are .004 in. (0.10 mm) more than distance (A) measured.

8. Install retainer (1). Turn the wheel and tighten the bolts that hold the retainer to the axle housing.

NOTE: Do not let lockwire go over heads of the bolts that hold retainer (1) to the axle housing.

Adjustment Off The Machine

1. Put the axle housing in a vertical position with the small end toward the top.

2. Put the retainer, wheel and bearings in position on the axle housing.

3. Install the hub and ring gear.

4. Install retainer (1) without shims (7). Use three bolts evenly spaced. Tighten the bolts evenly to ... 50 lb. ft.(70 N·m)

5. Turn wheel and again tighten bolts evenly to ... 50 lb. ft.(70 N·m)

6. Remove the retainer and turn wheel to remove preload from the bearings.

7. Measure the distance from the end of the axle housing to the end of the hub.

8. Install enough shims (7) between the axle housing and the retainer, so their thickness is .003 in. (0.08 mm) less than the distance measured.

9. Install retainer (1). Turn the wheel and tighten the bolts that hold the retainer to the axle housing.

NOTE: Do not let lockwire go over heads of the bolts that hold retainer (1) to the axle housing.
